10. Violet Evergarden (2018)

Part drama, part fantasy, part war drama, this emotional anime follows a young soldier named Violet as she navigates a post-war life. Having been raised as a warrior above all, she struggles to understand emotions but hopes her new job writing letters will help her to understand them more. This series has something for everybody, from beautiful animation to well-written characters and wildly impressive action sequences. Any fan of historical military dramas with a unique twist will surely enjoy this series.

8. One Piece (1999)

With over 1,000 episodes and countless followers, One Piece is a legendary series in the anime community. In this fun fantasy series, 17-year-old pirate Monkey D. Luffy and his crew travel the world in search of the greatest treasure in the world. While this anime may seem like it’s all fun and games, don’t let its fun designs fool you, as its episodes can get pretty intense in drama and fights.

7. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006)

Often regarded as one of the most intelligent anime protagonists ever written, Lelouch Lamperouge is a prince of the Britannian Imperial Family who, along with his sister, was banished to Japan as a political hostage and presumed dead. After receiving a mysterious gift that allows him to control others, he uses his vast knowledge and new abilities to take revenge against his family and the Brittanian Empire.

6. Vinland Saga (2019)

Historical fiction buff or not, most anime fans will agree that Vinland Saga is a must-watch series. The show specifically follows a young Viking named Thorfinn on his quest to avenge his father’s death. It takes legends fans have heard about and dramatizes them, making for an entertaining series with plenty of drama and action.

5. Cowboy Bebop (1998)

This futuristic action show is often regarded as one of the best series of all time, with one of the most iconic anime soundtracks as well. Following a group of eclectic bounty hunters aboard a spaceship called the Bebop, it’s a show that stands the test of time and has broad appeal. Fans of any genre will enjoy the adventures of this close-knit crew of misfits.

3. Monster (2004)

The morally challenging series follows a brain surgeon named Dr. Kenzo Tenma. Feeling responsible for the monster he allowed to live, Tenma vows to fix his mistakes and save his former patient.

1. Hunter x Hunter (2011)

A fan favorite series among anime enthusiasts, and for good reason. This series follows a young boy named Gon on his quest to become a Hunter and find his father. While he’s got plenty of friends to help him on his quest, Gon’s also got plenty of enemies trying to hold him back as well.
