Perry Mason — the prestige HBO take on the classic and often-adapted Erle Stanley Gardner novels — was an instant hit when it debuted in 2020. Critics loved it. Audiences bought into it. A second season was inevitable and, nearly three years later, we got one.
That season is due to end. The finale is right around the corner, and fans will rightly be curious not just about the outcome of a plot that involves a murder, an international conspiracy, and race relations in 30s Los Angeles, but also about the show’s potential future on HBO.
Here’s everything we know.
Will there be a Perry Mason Season 3 on HBO?
Renewed or canceled status: TBC
At the time of writing, HBO have not made an official decision about the future of Perry Mason.
The interest is certainly there among audiences, and the cast have been vocal about wanting to reunite to tell more stories in this universe. The reboot took pains to reintroduce the criminal defense attorney at an early stage of his new vocation, with a new backstory and potentially a whole new career ahead of him.
The character of Perry Mason and the cases he involves himself in tend to have a social or political relevance that still exists even today, and audiences will never tire in the examination of how our justice system works — and often fails. Perry Mason is about righting wrongs and fighting injustice, in every interpretation of the material, which means it’ll remain topical forever.
The first season was the show finding its feet, which is reflected in the critic and audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. The second season, though, seems to have almost perfected the formula and pips the first in both metrics. Audience enthusiasm remains high and consistent. It seems very few people would complain about a third season, and possibly even more besides.
Our official prediction is that Perry Mason will be renewed for a third season, but we’ll update this page either way as soon as we know more.
