The latest star-studded drama from David E. Kelley, Love & Death is the latest take on the much-adapted true story of Candy Montgomery, a Texan housewife who began an affair with a fellow member of her Methodist church congregation and hacked his wife, Betty Gore, to pieces with a wood-splitting axe.
As ever with HBO Max, the miniseries dropped three episodes on its premiere date of April 27, 2023, and will proceed weekly henceforth.
Here’s everything that happened in Love & Death Episode 1, Episode 2, and Episode 3:
- Candy Montgomery, after a lot of careful planning and preparation, began an affair with Allan Gore.
- Candy was partly inspired to have an affair by the recent divorce of Pastor Jackie, and a general sense of dissatisfaction with her husband Pat and their staunchly conservative nuclear family.
- Allan’s wife, Betty, got pregnant, which compelled him to slow down the affair so he could be closer to his family. She also suffered from post-partum depression in the past and was becoming increasingly unstable.
- Allan and Betty repaired their marriage by attending a Marriage Encounter, which Candy wasn’t happy about. Allan tried to break the relationship off and she eventually relented, though it’s clear she wasn’t entirely over it.
- At around the same time, Pat discovered a love letter to Candy from Allan, and Betty figured out that the two were having an affair. So, both spouses are aware of it at the same time.
- At the end of the third episode, when Candy called to see Betty, the latter confronted her with the wood-splitting axe.

The latest episode will air on HBO Max on May 4 at 12 am PT/3 am ET.

There will be seven episodes of Love & Death. The first three premiered on HBO Max together and the rest will air weekly until the finale on May 25.

Predictions for Love & Death Season 1 Episode 4:
- Betty will attack Candy, and she will somehow disarm her and turn the axe against her.
- Candy struck Betty 41 times with the axe — at this point, we haven’t really seen evidence that Candy is capable of such violence, so it’ll be interesting to see how this is depicted. I think it’ll play out almost trance-like, as a callback to that ominous scene of her grinding meat at the end of Episode 2.
- The show will likely pivot in tone now. The next episode may well feature Candy trying to cover up the crime and it eventually being discovered. From there, it’s likely that the focus will turn to the trial and the effect the murder has on the community and Candy’s reputation.
