The 2023 Netflix True crime series The Nurse is a disturbing and chilling true story of killer nurse Christina Aistrup Hansen and her terrible crimes.
It took the intervention of new employee Pernille Kurzmann Larsen and her partner Niels Lundén to set events in motion that would lead to her eventual arrest.
In previous articles, we discussed Pernille, the nurse at the hospital who would be mentored by Christina and become her friend, but this article is going to take a look at hospital physician Niels Lundén, and we answer the questions, where is Niels Lunden now and was he a real person?
Who is Niels Lundén?
Niels Lundén is a constantly busy but good-natured doctor who prioritizes the needs of his patients. When Pernille Larsen takes a position at the hospital, he becomes romantically involved with her. The pair are pivotal in uncovering the terrible secret behind Nurse Christina Aistrup Hansen.
He is played by actor Peter Zandersen who you might recognize from the series Borgen. He enrolled at the University of Copenhagen, and when he began working in the emergency department, he found it was his true calling.
In journalist Kristian Corfixen’s book The Nurse: Inside Denmark’s Most Sensational Criminal Trial from 2022, the physician had reportedly practiced in the Danish capital for a few years before interning at Nykøbing Falster Hospital, joining full-time in 2009 when he was 41.
Although he trusted Pernille very much, having known her since she started work at the hospital, he did point out that the accusation would be potentially harmful and dangerous, but they worked together to ensure that there was a foundation for their suspicions.
A fateful night in February 2015 confirmed the true horror behind the real motivations of Nurse Christina.

Yes, Niels is a real person and was one of the pivotal players in the conviction of Christina Aistrup Hansen.
Where is Niels Lundén Now?
After the traumatic events at the hospital, Niels left the Nykøbing Falster Hospital around the late 2010s. It was Niels who made the final decision to contact South Zealand and Lolland-Falster’s deputy police inspector Søren Ravn Nielsen, leading to Christina’s ultimate arrest.
The nature of the investigation and the way it was conducted seemed to lead to Niels leaving his position.
Initially, there was a backlash against the couple that would make things difficult for them. Staff would talk about the events, and become wary of working with Niels and Pernille, scared that they would also make similar accusations against them.
It appears that Niels still practices medicine and is currently serving as a doctor at Guldborgsund Municipality.
Now in his mid-fifties, he has since married Pernille. Together they have his son from a previous relationship and her daughter from a prior relationship. They also have a son of their own too.
