We review the Prime Video Comedy Special Stand-Up Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much?, which was released on May 2nd, 2023.
Jimmy O. Yang started doing stand-up comedy at 21 in Los Angeles. In 2014, he made his first late-night stand-up appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show.
He followed by getting a guest role that turned into a leading role on the hit HBO show Silicon Valley. He debuts his second stand-up comedy special, Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? on Prime Video.
Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? Review
Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? sees Yang dive into love languages, loser friends, and negotiating with his Asian parents.
Jimmy O. Yang hit the stage and said, “It’s never been a better time to be an Asian.” He followed by talking about BTS and how they are the most popular band in the world.
Of course, he talks about how gangster it is that they have to enlist in the Korean Army and how scary it would be to come across them and their pink hair in the middle of a war—a funny little bit to kickstart the show (Yang even sings a little BTS).
Yang has a hilarious bit about the Emmy Awards. If you don’t know, Yang was one of the leads in the HBO series Silicon Valley. He joked about how they would get nominated every year, but they knew they would lose cause they had to sit in the back.
One year they lost, and he made his rounds toward the front and talked to who he thought was Rachael Brosnahan and congratulated her for her nominees. At first, he thought, Is The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a bitch because she blew him off, but after persisting, she said, “Oh, I’m Evan Rachel Wood, star of WestWorld.” I died laughing.
Sometimes when you watch a comedian on the stage, you find yourself in and out of their jokes, and that’s what I felt with Yang. While his highs are high, the lows are low, and I see it happen because I’m not sure Yang has a full hour in him.
You have some comedians that work on that half hour and perfect it before diving into the full hour, and the pacing of Yang’s special felt off and made me believe he might not have that hour yet. It’s almost as if he is still fleshing the entire thing out instead of us getting the final presentation.
Is Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? good or bad?
While far from perfect, Jimmy O. Yang’s good jokes do outweigh the bad.
The special is easy to throw on in the background and enjoy while getting some work done.
Is Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? worth watching?
Jimmy O. Yang: Guess How Much? is definitely worthy of a watch if you are looking for some laughs.
Again, it’s not the best stand-up special you will see this year, but it’s one you can have some fun with. Yang is rock solid on the stage, and I can’t wait to see his next special.
