Humans love to imagine the end of the world, and the disaster movie Greenland is no exception. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, it follows John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison Garrity (Morena Baccarin), and their son as they attempt to find safe haven from the planet-killing comet that’s hurtling towards Earth.

The family experiences the best and worst in humanity as they undertake their journey, culminating in a last-minute flight.

There are several movies where audiences can which city-leveling destruction unfold before their eyes, with everything from aliens, viruses, asteroids, comets, the moon itself, and good old-fashioned climate change.

Deep Impact (1998)

With a comet hurtling toward Earth and the US government keeping this fact from the public, reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) forces the President (Morgan Freeman) to announce his plan to save humanity. Astronaut Spurgeon “Fish” Tanner (Robert Duvall) will lead a team to try and detonate explosives on the comet itself to push the object from hitting Earth.

Armageddon (1998)

Another movie threatens Earth with an object from space, this time an asteroid. NASA boss Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) decides the only way save humanity is to drill into its surface and set off a nuclear bomb. He recruits driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) to lead the team, which also includes A.J. (Ben Affleck), a father trying to prove himself to his daughter.

2012 (2009)

Playing into the conspiracy theory that the Mayans predicted the Earth will end in 2012, an American scientist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) begins to warn people that the world will end. World leaders start preparations to survive by selecting who comes with them. Audiences follow failed writer Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) as he tries to lead his family to safety while the world is falling apart.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Continuing with natural disasters the Earth is hit by several natural disasters before the start of a new Ice Age. Climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is dismissed by U.N. officials when presenting his concerns; his research inevitably proves true. He spends much of the film trying to get to his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is trapped in New York with his friend Laura (Emmy Rossum). Jack and his crew must travel by foot from Philadelphia and brave the destruction.

I Am Legend (2007)

From climate change to viruses, this film follows Robert Neville (Will Smith), a survivor of a man-made plague that transforms humans into bloodthirsty mutants. He wanders through New York City with German Shepard Abbey, trying to find other survivors and developing a cure using his blood.

The Maze Runner (2014)

Loosely based on the book of the same name, The Maze Runner follows Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) as he is thrust into a labyrinthian maze with no memory of his past. He joins several boys and the elite Runners, who patrol the labyrinth to find a way out. Together with the new female Teresa (Kaya Scodelario), Thomas makes a daring escape.

The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008)

Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) is an alien who visits Earth and heralds upheaval globally. World governments and scientists race to try and understand what’s happening to the planet and try to figure out a way to stop it. Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) and her stepson understand the disturbing ramifications behind Klaatu’s statement that he is a “friend to the Earth.”

War of the Worlds (2005)

An adaptation of the iconic book by H. G. Wells, the film follows Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) as Martians plot an invasion of Earth. There is a battle for Earth as alien technology proves too powerful for the planet’s militaries.

Moonfall (2022)

Mysterious objects knock the moon from orbit, putting it on a collision course with Earth. With time running out before life as they know it ends, NASA executive Jocinda Fowler (Halle Berry) must team up with former astronaut Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson) and amateur researcher K.C.Houseman (John Bradley) to find out what’s happening and save humanity.

Don’t Look Up (2021)

Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discover that a comet will collide with planet Earth and destroy it, so they embark on a media tour to convince the world of what’s about to happen. Unfortunately, this doesn’t go as well as they hope.
