No Country for Old Men is the suspenseful, intense crime-drama film by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Javier Bardem, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin, Woody Harrelson, and Garret Dillahunt. It’s based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy and is a stellar adaptation. 

The story surrounds a hunter, whose life takes a dramatic turn when he finds two million dollars in the aftermath of a drug deal. He takes the money and is then followed by a psychopathic killer who wants it.

The Highwaymen (2019)

Similar to No Country for Old Men, this film is also set in Texas and stars Woody Harrelson as Maney Gault. It tells the true story of rangers Frank Hamer (Kevin Costner) and Maney who come out of retirement to hunt down the notorious Bonnie and Clyde. 

There Will be Blood (2007)

Both There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men showcase in-depth character study, exploring the dark side of humanity, through greed and ambition. This film stars Daniel Day-Lewis who gives an incredible performance, playing Daniel Plainview, a ruthless oil prospector who goes on a relentless pursuit to become the most powerful oil tycoon in America. 

True Grit (2010)

Similar to No Country for Old Men, this film is another novel adaptation, written and directed by the Coen brothers. The story follows 14-year-old Mattie Ross, who seeks help from a lawman to track down the man who killed her father. This film has a great focus on the characters’ development, and their outlooks on life. 

Leon (1994)

This is for the fans who enjoyed the violent, intense, compelling villain in No Country for Old Men. Here we have a stylish and violent assassin, who takes in a young girl after her family is killed. Together they form an unlikely relationship, which is beautifully brutal as he teaches her the secrets of his trade.

Fargo (1996)

If you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers’ work, I suggest watching Fargo. This film is a dark-comedy crime thriller about a pregnant police chief who investigates a series of murders in a small Minnesota town. Local man Jerry hires men to abduct his wife to extract money from his father-in-law, but this doesn’t go to plan and now he’s in trouble. With quirky characters, and excellent acting, this film is a must-watch. 

Hell or High Water (2016)

Starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Jeff Bridges, and Gil Birmingham, this Western crime thriller follows the story of two brothers who attempt to save their family’s ranch by committing a series of bank robberies while under hot pursuit by two seasoned Texas Rangers.

Sicario (2015)

This drug-war thriller film is a great watch after No Country for Old Men. The story surrounds a dangerous mission to stop a drug cartel operating between the US and Mexico. Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), an FBI agent, meets some hard truths when she’s thrown into some seriously intense situations. 

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007)

The final film on the list is another Western drama, where Robert Ford tries to join the gang of an outlaw Jesse James, who he has admired since childhood. He then kills him, due to resentment. This film has compelling villains, a complex plot and is considered one of the historically accurate depictions of Ford and James.
