Keeping the momentum from last week, episode 10 delivers one of the most exciting experiences yet.
We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10, “Conscience does make cowards of us all. II,” which contains spoilers.
There’s a thief on the loose at Chise’s (Atsumi Tanezaki) college, and they’ve stolen one of the most dangerous magic books in existence. While they seem to target Lucy (Minami Tsuda) and the Webster family specifically, that still doesn’t mean everyone else is safe.
Viewers still have no idea what Philomela (Maki Kawase) is up to and if her family is playing a part in this, but at this point, no one is off the suspects’ list just yet. Our only hope is that the culprit is captured this week before anyone else winds up in danger.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10 Recap
The episode opens with Seth’s driver realizing he is still alive after being attacked. It then cuts to Lucy and Seth speaking in the infirmary when Chise visits.

As they walk to the car, Seth, Lucy, and Chise are attacked by two large werewolf creatures. Lucy quickly recognizes them as the same creatures who murdered her family years ago.
How does Chise manage to escape the werewolves?
After receiving another message, Chise opens a portal to the secret passage featured in episode four of season two and uses it to escape the werewolves.
Inside the passage are Hound Dogs, who immediately attack the werewolves when they come in chasing after Chise and her friends.
Why does Chise decide to pay for the werewolves’ safe passage?
When Chise learns the werewolves are mates and hears them crying out for their children, she changes her mind and agrees to pay the Hound Dogs for their safe passage. However, it is too late, as the male wolf is already deceased.
When Marielle tries to help Simeon by seeing if he’s cursed, she sees that someone is using the book The Testament of Carnamagos to steal people’s magic power.
The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 10
In the courtyard, Lucy asks Chise why she helped them and also helped the wolves. Although she is upset with Chise for letting her family’s attacker go, she also appreciates finally having some leads on the attack.
The episode ends with Lucy collapsing before cutting to Philomela’s grandmother, Lizbeth Sargant, who seems to have something to do with it.
Finally, it feels like things are picking up and going somewhere. Although the whole first half of the season seems like a more roundabout way of getting here, I’m glad I can finally see the vision. I’m suddenly inquisitive about what’s happening. We’ve got potential villains and apparent suspects. There’s an actual problem to solve. I almost wish there were more episodes left to really truly enjoy this arc.
Today’s episode felt more reminiscent of season one, with a good balance of action, magic, and plot development. It’s nice seeing Seth’s story elaborated on more, and I appreciate the callback to the very first episode. I’m genuinely interested in seeing where this goes.
