Charlie St. Cloud (2010)

Zac Efron stars as Charlie St. Cloud, who is about to go off to college and doubles as an award-winning sailor. He has to deal with the death of his brother, Sam, while dating Tess (Amanda Crew). You could call the adaptation of Ben Sherwood’s The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud movie romance between Charlie and Tess spiritual, to say the least.

Chemical Hearts (2020)

Chemical Hearts stars Austin Abrams Henry Page, a high school senior who falls in love with Grace Town (Lili Reinhart), a new transfer student who hides a heartbreaking secret. If you are a fan of these YA-romantic movies, it’s certainly one of the least eye-roll-inducing efforts the genre has produced in recent memory.

Everything, Everything (2017)

Like Five Feet Apart, Everything, Everything tells the story of young love with two teenagers separated by the glass. Amandla Stenberg plays Maddy, who has lived with an auto-immune disease called SCID (Severe Combined Immunodeficiency). She is a young woman who never had an excuse to risk her life outside until a boy her age, Oliver (Nick Robinson), moved next door.

The Fault in Our Stars (2014)

A rare young-adult romance drama whose heartbreaking story rarely becomes overtly manipulative. The modern Gen-Z classic stars Shailene Woodley as Hazel, a 16-year-old cancer patient who meets Gus (Ansel Elgort) in a cancer support group. They share their love of literature and go on a road trip to meet a reclusive author on a journey of their short-lived lifetimes.

Here on Earth (2000)

When the rich kid Kelley (played by Chris Klein) crashes his car into the diner in a small farming town, he’s given the Doc Hollywood treatment by being sentenced to help rebuild the restaurant. That’s when he falls for the owner’s daughter, Samantha (Lelle Sobieski), who’s dating Jasper (Josh Hartnett). All while she’s dealing with a terminal illness, bone cancer.

I Still Believe (2020)

Brought to you by the Erwin brothers, I Still Believe gets the true story treatment of Christian country music star Jeremy Camp (K.J. Apa), who deals with the impending terminal illness of his girlfriend, Melissa (played by Britt Robertson). This faith-based young-adult film has an outstanding 98% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with over 1,000 verified reviews.

If I Stay (2014)

Chloë Grace Moretz stars as Mia, a gifted cellist who becomes suspended between life and her own death when involved in a violent car crash. If I Stay’s story follows Mia’s pursuit of her dreams to attend Juilliard or give up her aspirations to be with the love of her life, Adam (Jamie Blackley).

The Lost Husband (2020)

If you are a serious cinephile, you may roll your eyes at this Leslie Bibb and Josh Duhamel vehicle, but for all its cliches, you think you went trope fishing with The Lost Husband but will find you caught a quietly charming one. Based on Katherine Center’s novel of the same name, Vicky Wight’s film tells the story of two broken souls looking for redemption when it comes to love.

Love Story (1970)

The classic film stars Ali MacGraw and Ryan O’Neal as young lovers whose romance ends just when their hopes of starting a family are about to begin. Based on the book of the same name by Erich Segal, who wrote the script, Love Story features one of the greatest tear-inducing scenes at the film’s end of all time.

The Sun is Also a Star (2019)

While this has nothing to do with physical conditions that deal with life or death, The Sun is Also a Star deals with the disease of the heart. Black-ish star Yara Shahidi is Natasha, a medical student who is about to be deported with her family back to Jamaica the same week she meets Daniel (Charles Melton), the son of Korean immigrants, and the sparks fly.
