Summary

Platonic is definitely beginning to feel a little repetitive, but “Let the River Run” at least includes some decent one-liners.

This recap of the 2023 Apple TV+ Platonic Season 1 Episode 7, “Let the River Run”, contains spoilers.

The chaos of Episode 6 seems to have marked a turning point for both Sylvia and Will. The former is going back to work, while the latter has devoted all of his attention to the creation of a new beer. Things are looking up for both of them. And, in a show like this, that rarely bodes well.

Platonic Season 1 Episode 7 Recap

Sylvia’s work problem is that she’s old — relative to the other associates in the office, anyway. Can a middle-aged housewife summon the same level of energy as a twenty-something? Stewart doesn’t think so, which makes Charlie not think so, but to be fair her more immediate problem might be her sense of humor.

Yes, of course, Sylvia alienates everyone in the office immediately by trying to be one of the gang, misjudging Millennial sensitivity. But then the work gets on top of her too. She falls asleep stood up in the office and accidentally knocks down and damages a portrait of her boss, Kirk Friedkin.

Panicking, Sylvia calls Will for help. Who else?

How does Sylvia try to fix Kirk’s painting?

Will’s beer is a blackberry sour that costs $60 per bottle to make, which he wants to sell at less than $10 apiece as a limited edition item that basically doubles as a marketing tool (assuming people like it). This is exactly the kind of business acumen you’d expect from a character who wears cardigans with skull t-shirts, so it’s not surprising that he isn’t able to fix paintings (although, “Who falls asleep standing up? What are you, a f*cking camel?” is easily the best single gag of the series thus far.)

Luckily, Audrey, Will’s ex-wife, is an art consultant with short-notice connections to an anti-establisher restorer. Sylvia drops the painting off there, and Audrey accidentally let’s slip that there’s a party going on at the bar that Will was unaware of.

As it turns out, everyone is throwing a launch event for a new kombucha line that Will isn’t taking a cut of. His desire to just make great beer runs slightly contrary to the desire of everyone else to make actual money, and he despises the idea of compromising his vision to appease the masses (hence why they cut him out in the first place — he makes everything difficult). Even Peyton is there serving shots of the kombucha.

Platonic Season 1 Episode 7 Ending Explained

Will is, predictably, upset at this perceived betrayal, so Sylvia reports a gas leak to interrupt the party.

This minor win doesn’t last long, though. When Sylvia retrieves the painting she discovers that Audrey’s restorer friend couldn’t resist rendering Kirk Friedkin’s nose as a penis. She hangs it back up in the office regardless and tries to carry on as normal, but it isn’t long until Jessica from HR sends her packing. She lasted a single day in her new job.
