We discuss 10 Movies like The Gift (2015) you must watch. Add these well-recommended and highly-rated films to your watch list.

Joel Edgerton’s directorial debut, The Gift, received plenty of praise and accolades for its suspenseful and, frankly, terrifying plot. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall star as a married couple who ran into an old classmate, Gordo (played by Edgerton), after relocating to Chicago.

Catching up with an old acquaintance seems benign enough until he starts showing increasingly worrying behavior. From showing up at the couple’s home announced to leaving them mysterious “gifts,” as the plot unravels, it’s clear Gordo wants more than the occasional dinner invitation.

If suspenseful thrillers where insidious villains slowly reveal their sinister intentions keep you up at night, here are a few more titles sure to unnerve and feed into your paranoia.

10 Movies like The Gift (2015)

Single White Female (1992)

It’s hard to believe it’s been more than 30 years since this iconic thriller starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh hit the big screens. The story follows a young woman whose new roommate starts acting a bit strange soon after moving in.

It doesn’t take long before her behavior goes from slightly quirky to downright murderous.

The Invitation (2015)

This suspenseful thriller, also released in 2015, is as nightmare-inducing as intriguing. The narrative follows a man and his girlfriend accepting a dinner invitation from his ex-wife and her strange new beau. What could go wrong?

Ma (2019)

In the first half of this Netflix original, Octavia Spencer plays every teenager’s dream adult; a middle-aged woman who offers her home as a haven for underage drinking, drugging, and other shenanigans. Of course, not all is as it seems, and the seemingly harmless “Ma” soon starts showing her true colors.

Gone Girl (2014)

Based on a best-selling novel by Gillian Flynn and directed by David Fincher, Gone Girl follows a man accused of being responsible for his wife’s highly publicized disappearance. As we learn more about the couple’s marriage, it becomes clear there’s more to the story and that his wife might not even be missing.

The Girl on the Train (2016)

This BAFTA-nominated psychological thriller stars Emily Blunt as a woman who accidentally gets involved in a missing persons case. Based on a novel of the same name by Paula Hawkins, this suspenseful title has enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat for the entire runtime.

Unhinged (2020)

Featuring a strong performance from Russell Crowe, Unhinged is a terrifying tale about a road rage incident turning deadly. A frustrated single mom makes the mistake of honking her horn at a pick-up truck blocking her way.

Unfortunately for her, the other driver is not the type to let these things go quickly.

Fight Club (1999)

When Fight Club premiered at the turn of the century, it wasn’t received well, so the studio considered it a flop. The thriller has since gained a cult following.

It stars Edward Norton as an office worker unhappy with his lot in life who jumps at the dangerous yet exciting opportunities offered by a mysterious soap salesman played by Brad Pitt.

Get Out (2017)

Jordan Peele’s acclaimed debut feature, Get Out, follows a young African American man (Daniel Kaluuya) going to meet his white girlfriend’s (Allison Williams) parents in the Deep South. If that isn’t stressful enough, at his destination, he realizes that non-so-subtle racism is the least disturbing thing about his future in-laws.

The Game (1997)

The Game stars Michael Douglas as an investment banker who gets a rather unusual birthday gift. As the supposed game he’s playing gets increasingly dangerous, it slowly becomes impossible for him to discern what’s real and part of the ruse.

The Visit (2015)

This found-footage thriller centers on two teens sent to spend some quality time with the maternal grandparents they’ve yet to meet. At first, Grandpa and Grandma are as wholesome as you’d expect. Then it gets weird.
