Summary

Despite being an entertaining episode, it feels incomplete and leaves viewers wanting more.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 12, “A small leak will sink a great ship. II,” which contains spoilers and explains the Ending.

When things were looking up for Chise (Atsumi Tanezaki) and her friends, they took a turn for the worst when the group volunteered to do Lucy’s (Minami Tsuda) job for her. Now Chise, Rian (Seiichiro Yamashita), Zoey, and Isaac (Koutaro Nishiyama) are stuck in the waste tower, unaware of how much danger they might be in.

While viewers don’t know much about Fabio, he seems like bad news, and Philomela (Maki Kawase) being down there with him doesn’t make things much better. Hopefully, Chise and her friends can figure out what Fabio and Philomela are up to before they find themselves in serious trouble.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Episode 12 Recap

The episode opens with Chise and her friends following Fabio deeper into the waste tower. He explains they will be searching for plants and gems that can only be found on the night of Halloween. While Zoey and Issac gather minerals, Chise, Rian, and Philomela are tasked with retrieving plants only certain people can see.

Who attacks Zoey in the waste tower?

While collecting gems in the waste tower, Zoey is attacked by two sorcerers. However, these are not regular sorcerers, as they appear to look like animals and are hostile.

Who is Fabio?

Although the students mistake him for their instructor, Fabio is a sorcerer bound to the waste tower.

According to Fabio, only people who have killed someone before can see the special plants.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride Season 2 Ending Explained

As Chise and her friends exit the waste tower, they are met by Elias, and the college principal, Liza Quillyn. When Liza attempts to speak to Philomela, her grandmother, Lizbeth, appears as an owl and steps in instead.

Lizbeth attempts to withdraw Philomela from college, but Liza says that as long as she wishes to continue her studies, she will be allowed to stay. As Lizbeth insults Philomela, Chise and her friends take her away.

The episode ends with Liza and the dorm cats threatening Lizbeth and closing off the college campus to intruders for safety reasons.

Although this was billed as season two, this definitely did not feel like an entire season. Things did not start picking up until the last few episodes, and now that it’s over, I realize I wasn’t ready for things to end, especially not so abruptly.

This felt more like a mid-season finale than it did a stand-alone season.

While the finale was more exciting than some of the previous episodes, switching back and forth between storylines was sometimes a bit jarring. This didn’t feel like the best choice for a season finale, as it seemed like several storylines were not fleshed out as much as they should’ve been. In the end, I felt like I still had many unanswered questions.

With the way this season ended, a third season will surely be coming. I honestly expected there to be a new season announcement at the end of the credits with how this ended, but there wasn’t, so I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. As slow as the beginning half of the season was, I was definitely more invested by the end.
