This article contains major spoilers for the ending of Let’s Get Divorced Season 1 Episode 9.
The Japanese Netflix series Let’s Get Divorced has a relatively subversive premise for a rom-com.
It’s about fledgling politician Taishi Shoji (Tori Matsuzaka) and beloved television actress Yui (Riisa Naka) trying to part ways after the former is snapped in public with a young reporter, Sakurako (Lisa Oda). However, their circumstances do not permit a clean separation, so across nine brutally overlong episodes, various personal dramas and competing subplots conspire against the divorce.
Here’s how it all (eventually) concludes.
Let’s Get Divorced Season 1 Ending Explained
Do Taishi and Yui get divorced?
Let’s get the obvious question out of the way: Yes, Taishi and Yui get divorced.
Like everything else in this show, though, it takes a while to get there. The crucial moment of actually signing the papers, reminiscing over good memories, and finally committing to the decision doesn’t come until after Taishi loses the election to his rival, Soda, by a frustratingly narrow margin.
In the aftermath of their separation, there is the small matter of what to do about their child. Yui gives birth to a boy, Yoji, and Taishi’s mother, who refuses to accept the divorce, wants to raise him, with the obvious intention of molding him into another politician.
This, understandably, is not what Yui wants for her son, and she makes that very clear, though Taishi’s mother does take care of Yoji often because of Yui’s work commitments.
Do Taishi and Yui get back together?
Let’s get the second-most obvious question of the way: No, Taishi and Yui do not get back together.
They do think about it, though. Admittedly not until three years after Yoji’s birth, with Taishi on the cusp of a political comeback and Yui absolutely flourishing as an international star. These things are never simple. There’s still lots of love and familiarity there.
However, the marriage didn’t work the first time for several very good reasons. And there are very few reasons to believe it would work a second time around.
Still, Taishi does end up with a political victory over Soda, who is forced to resign in the midst of controversy and develops a strong, regular relationship with his son. It’s a happy ending that proves sometimes it’s better to cut one’s losses than to remain in a toxic situation for longer than is necessary.
Of course, the show could have stood to realize that several hours earlier, especially since most of us knew this would be the outcome anyway.
