Where was the 2023 Netflix series Sleeping Dog filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

Where was Sleeping Dog on Netflix filmed? We discuss the 2023 German Netflix series and the locations the production crew used.

The German crime-thriller series Sleeping Dog has dropped on Netflix this week and already has decent reviews from critics. The original title in German is Schlafende Hunde, and the series is based on the 2016 series The Exchange Principle from Israel.

The series has six episodes, and all of them are available to watch on Netflix.

The story surrounds a fallen Berlin Police inspector Mike Atlas (Max Riemelt), who is now sleeping on the streets, and a young prosecutor, eager to prove himself. Mike is haunted by the investigation and verdict in the Herres murder case, which leads the unlikely duo to reopen the case to search for the truth.

They both get more than they bargained for, as they’re pulled into a conspiracy theory, leading back to a terror attack over a year ago. The film is filled with action, drama, and a mystery looming, keeping you intrigued and entertained throughout the series.

The cast includes Max Riemelt (Sense8) as Mike Atlas, Luise von Finckh as Jule Andergast, Carlo Ljubek as Luca Zaric, Antonio Wannek as Roland “Socke” Sokowski, Melodie Wakivuamina as Britney Adebayo and many more.

Henning Kamm and Sibyelle Stellbrink produce Sleeping Dog through Real Film Berlin, their second collaboration with the streaming giant Netflix.

You may have heard of their first production, the acclaimed series Unorthodox, released in 2020, based on Deborah Fledman’s autobiography published in 2012.

Where was the 2023 Netflix series Sleeping Dog filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

Berlin, Germany

The Netflix series Sleeping Dog was filmed entirely in Germany and was primarily shot in the capital city of Berlin. Filming began in July 2022 and was suspected to have finished filming months later in September. As this is the Sleeping Dog team’s home, it’s no surprise they chose to do all of the filming here. Germany offers tempting tax rebates and discounts for filming sets.

The famous capital city was used for internal and external shots in Sleeping Dog. Berlin has famous landmarks, such as the Berlin Wall, Potsdamer Platz, Museumsinsel (Museum Island), the East-side Gallery, Berlin Zoo, Schloss Charlottenburg (Charlottenburg Palace), Fernsehturm (TV Tower), and many others, so keep your eyes out to see if you can spot any.

Media reports that they filmed many of the interior scenes in a studio called Havel Studios, and some shooting took place in Babelsberg Film Studio and Berliner Union Film Ateliers. Babelsberg Film Studio is one of the oldest and largest film studios in Europe and is based right in the center of Berlin. The studio has sound stages and allows productions to construct sets to shoot interior scenes.

Berlin has also served as a production base for films such as the 2009 Tarantino Film Inglourious Basterds, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Downfall, Homeland, and John Wick: Chapter 4, and I’m sure many more films will be made in this location in the future.
