Europa Report is a 2013 film directed by Sebastián Cordero and stars Daniel Wu as William Xu, Anamaria Marinca as Rosa Dasque, Christian Camargo as Daniel Luxembourg, Karolina Wydra as Katya Petrovna, Sharlto Copley as James Corrigan, and Michael Nyqvist as Andrei Blok and recounts the fictional tale of the first trip to Jupiter’s moon, Europa, to see if there’s life there.

Life (2017)

Six astronauts aboard the International Space Station — David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal), Rory Adams (Ryan Reynolds), Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson), Sho Murakami (Hiroyuki Sanada), Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare), and Ekaterina “Kat” Golovkina (Olga Dihovichnaya) — find evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars, but quickly find out it’s far more intelligent and violent than they imagine.

The Martian (2015)

Another Ridley Scott film, The Martian, follows Mark Watney (Matt Damon) after he’s left stranded on Mars. With his supplies running out, Watney must use all his skills to survive on the red planet until NASA or his crewmates figure out a way to rescue him.

Prometheus (2012)

For the final Ridley Scott film on this list, Prometheus tells the story before Alien. It follows a team of explorers trying to find clues to humanity’s origins on Earth by traveling across space.

Scientist Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) hopes to meet a benevolent godlike being to verify her religious beliefs, while archaeologist Charlie Holloway wants to find proof to debunk these religious beliefs. But the crew won’t be prepared for the horrors that await them.

District 9 (2009)

30 years ago, alien refugees fled to Earth after their planet died. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, they’re managed by Multi-National United, a company that wants to master the alien’s technology.

When MNU employee Wikus van de Merwe (Sharlto Copley) starts turning into one of the aliens, he must hide in District 9 and search for a cure.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

When Dr. Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and other astronauts are sent on a mysterious mission to investigate an alien monolith, their ship’s computer system, HAL 9,000, begins to show increasingly erratic behavior, which means the crew has to go up against the machine to destroy it.

Interstellar (2014)

Set in a dark future where humanity is facing extinction, humans have to come up with a plan to save themselves. NASA physicist Professor Brand (Michael Caine) wants to send Earth’s population to a new home through a wormhole.

But before he sends everyone on what could be a one-way trip, Brand sends NASA pilot Joseph Cooper (Matthew McConaughey) and a team of researchers through the wormhole to make sure it’s safe.

Apollo 18 (2011)

Apollo 17 was alleged to be the last U.S.-sponsored moon voyage, right? Well, in this film, found footage suggests there was another Apollo mission — Apollo 18 — that ended extremely badly.

Astronauts John Grey (Ryan Robbins), Nathan Walker (Lloyd Owen), and Benjamin Anderson (Warren Christie) discover an old Soviet space capsule and a dead cosmonaut and have to find out what happened.

Moon (2009)

Set in a lunar mine, astronaut Sam Bell’s (Sam Rockwell) three-year shift is coming to an end at last. All Sam wants is to see his wife (Dominique McElligott) and daughter, but this is postponed when Sam’s health collapses.

He starts suffering headaches and hallucinations and even meets what seems to be a younger version of himself. Sam must figure out what’s going on before the company crew arrives.

The Blair Witch Project (1999)

Although the only film on this list not belonging to sci-fi, The Blair Witch Project is sure to be a terrifying watch for anyone who likes found footage films.

The Blair Witch Project takes place in the fictitious town of Blair in Maryland and follows three students, Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams, as they create a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local legend.
