This recap of the 2023 Netflix K-Drama Celebrity Season 1 Episode 7, “#what_a_hotmess #turn_the_tables”, contains spoilers.
All throughout Celebrity, A-ri has shared the ostensible “cheat codes” for making it in the influencer industry. What seems to be dividing the back half of the twelve-episode season from the first is the difference between realizing what those cheat codes were and finally managing to put them into practice.
Episode 6 felt like a turning point. “#what_a_hotmess #turn_the_tables” feels like the logical extension of that — A-ri taking the ball and running with it.
Celebrity Season 1 Episode 7 Recap
Picking up from where things left off, the situation with Yu-ri serves to emphasize a point that present-day A-ri reiterates in her live-stream narration. It doesn’t matter what hand you’re dealt, only how you play the cards.
This idea is similarly expressed in the idea of A-ri, in her newfound success, running into a factory owner named Mr. Park, who was a friend of her father’s during his own success. Life is beginning to come full circle.
The development of A-ri’s business and branding means she’s also able to turn what were once negatives (the shutting down of Bibida following an unexpected tax audit) into positives (taking on the leftover inventory). With A-ri essentially off the grid, the smug Gabin Society thinks she’s ruined, but it’s really the opposite.
How does A-ri get into the Balmain event?
The nexus of this episode is a fashion event hosted by Balmain that all of the Gabin Society are in attendance for — including, unexpectedly, A-ri.
A-ri managed to gain a ticket to the event by luring Angela into a room on the pretense of a paid-for sexual liaison. This is revenge for A-ri after Angela lured her to the Aragon Club.
In her embarrassment, Angela begs for something unexpected from A-ri — pity. She reveals that her husband doesn’t give her any money, instead saying she’ll get everything when he dies. She’s trying to keep up with Chae-hee and Ji-na by attending events and securing brand deals, but the stress of not being able to wear an outfit more than once, or not having every variant of a handbag, is taking enough of a toll on her that she’s willing to quite literally sell herself.
In exchange for that pity, and her silence, A-ri takes Angela’s ticket to the Balmain event.
What does A-ri want from Choi-bom?
What we subsequently learn is that gaining entrance to the Balmain event was part of a long-con for A-ri to befriend and gain the endorsement of Choi-bom, one of the models/designers.
Remember the very first cheat code, about finding a celebrity and becoming a parasite? Well, this is A-ri putting her own advice into practice. She gets a selfie with Choi-bom, and gains her endorsement for her brand and cosmetics, which provides another enormous boost to her business and brand (much to the chagrin of the Gabin Society, as usual.)
Celebrity Season 1 Episode 7 Ending Explained
A-ri uses this boost in popularity to pitch a deal with Jun-kyung’s brand, The Hue. They haven’t really spoken since the events at the club, but A-ri wants to keep things strictly business.
Jun-kyung, though, has other ideas, and the two eventually kiss.
We also learn that the overdose victim from the club has died. Tae-jeon tried to get a doctor to keep him alive but to no avail. The repercussions of this are sure to be felt sooner rather than later.
