Incantation is a 2022 horror, focusing on a mother and a daughter and a curse on their house. Directed by Kevin Ko, audiences follow Li Ronan (Hsuan-yen Tsai) as she encourages viewers to memorize an insignia and chant to help lift a curse on her six-year-old-daughter, Dodo (Huang Sin-ting), something that Li Ronan brought on her by breaking a religious artifact.

It utilizes a found footage style, drawing viewers intimately in with Li’s life and the problems she’s facing. Found footage has been embraced by the horror genre, and is something that can help heighten the horrors because what’s happening feels more realistic. Blair Witch Project (1999)

Following three film students — Heather Donahue (Rei Hance), Joshua Leonard (Joshua Leonard), and Michael Williams (Michael Williams) — as they travel to a fictional town in America to make a documentary about the Blair Witch, a local murder steeped in myth and legend. Over several days, townspeople are interviewed and clues are gathered, but things inevitably go wrong when the students get lost in the woods.

Grave Encounters (2011)

Grave Encounters follows a TV crew of a paranormal reality show, Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson), Sasha Parker (Ashleigh Gryzko), T.C. Gibson (Merwin Mondesir), Houston Grey (Mackenzie Gray), and Matt White (Juan Riedinger) as they film a supposedly haunted psychiatric hospital to prove paranormal activity and the devastating consequences of what happens when they find it.

Dark Water (2005)

Dahlia (Jennifer Connelly) just wants to take her daughter Ceci (Ariel Gade) away from her ex-husband, Kyle (Dougray Scott), and start their lives anew. But once they make it to their new house, the pair discover a leak in the ceiling of their new flat. They get the building owner, Cory Murray (John C. Reilly), and the supervisor Mr. Veeck (Pete Postlethwaite) to fix it, but it only gets worse. Being driven crazy by this issue, Dahlia goes to fix it herself.

The Medium (2021)

A documentary crew travels to the Isan region of Thailand to speak to Nim (Sawanee Utoomma), a medium/shaman who claims to be possessed by the spirit of Ba Yan, a local goddess of the region. But the crew and Nim find Ba Yan isn’t as nice as they think, especially when Mink (Narilya Gulmongkolpech) starts behaving strangely, and the crew and Nim have to figure out why.

The Changeling (1980)

John Russell (George C. Scott), a music composer, is on holiday with his family when a horrific accident kills both his wife and daughter. Understandably distraught with grief, Russell moves out of his New York home for a more secluded house near Seattle. But he soon starts to sense a ghost, and seeks the assistance of Claire Norman (Trish Van Devere), to uncover what’s happening.

The Orphanage (2007)

Laura García Rodríguez (Belén Rueda) has fond memories of her childhood, which she spent in an orphanage, but the building has since been closed. She convinces her husband, Carlos Sánchez Rivera (Fernando Cayo) to buy it and reopen it. One day, their own adopted son, Simón Sánchez Rivera (Roger Príncep), disappears. He’s presumed dead months later, and a grief-stricken Laura thinks she hears spirits, who can help find him.

REC (2007)

Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco), a late-night TV host, and her cinematographer Pablo (Pablo Rosso) follow a breaking incident of an infected woman at an apartment building but become trapped once the police seal it up. Worse still, is that all of the residents are infected, and they’re starting to become very aggressive, forcing Ángela and Pablo to try and find a way out.

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)

Mia Medina (Michelle Ang) leads a documentary crew about Alzheimer’s patients, and are focusing on the daily lives of Deborah Logan (Jill Larson) and her daughter Sarah Logan (Anne Ramsay). But they soon discover that something sinister is happening, as Deborah starts showing increasingly bizarre and strange actions that even her physician can’t explain.

Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum (2018)

This film follows the crew of a horror web series as they travel to an abandoned mental asylum to live stream an episode. But they soon encounter much more than they bargain for as they move deeper and deeper through the decrepit building, with an episode that will cost them dearly.

Hell House LLC (2015)

This final film sees another documentary crew investigate another unfortunate incident, this time visiting the building that claimed the lives of 15 people during a haunted house tour. They want to find out what really happened, a trip that will see them encounter the supernatural.
