Summary

Continued to be excellently paced and surprisingly revelatory, See You in My 19th Life begins to adopt a darker tone as it approaches the midpoint of the season.

This recap of the Netflix K-Drama See You in My 19th Life Season 1 Episode 6 contains spoilers.

See You in My 19th Life continues to be defined by stand-out performances, but also a sense of careful development that gradually expands and develops the premise without sacrificing depth or character.

One can imagine this show attracting a pretty die-hard following on the strength of its acting, or even its aesthetics, but the pacing of the story shouldn’t be understated. It’s certainly not the show I was expecting from the premise, and I think it’s turning out to be much better for that.

See You in My 19th Life Season 1 Episode 6 Recap

Continuing what is becoming something of a trend, the sixth episode picked up from the cliffhanger ending of Episode 5 directly. Ji-eum, you’ll recall, has just confessed her real identity as Jo-won, her previous incarnation, to Cho-won, who was becoming suspicious of her motivations and behavior.

Cho-won is understandably hesitant to accept this immediately – after all, it’s pretty big news. To convince Cho-won, Ji-eum unveils a series of closely guarded secrets that serve as undeniable proof. After some contemplation and soul-searching, Cho-won gradually embraces the truth and warmly welcomes Ji-eum into her life.

Or, more accurately, welcomes her sister back into her life. The matter of how much or how fundamentally a person may change in this situation is one of the more intriguing existential questions thrown up by the premise.

Is Ji-eum’s honesty dangerous?

And Ji-eum seems to be making a habit of revealing her true nature to people, from Ae-kyung to now Cho-won. The possibility is floated that perhaps Ae-kyung’s mysterious illness is a result of learning this secret. Is this something akin to the butterfly effect, unintended repercussions stemming from meddling with the natural order?

As Cho-won and Ji-eum’s bond grows stronger over time, the two have to have a conversation at work about informality which is overheard by Do-yoon, who is subsequently brought into the circle and asked to protect the truth.

The series is beginning to develop a palpable sense of unease about the knock-on effects of Ji-eum’s honesty.

What caused the crash that killed Ju-won?

There’s also the past to consider. Dong-U, after overhearing a conversation suggesting the crash that killed Ju-won was caused by an attempt on Seo-ha’s life, takes this information to Seo-ha with typically remunerative intentions. But it sparks a fire in Ji-eum to investigate the circumstances of her own murder.

This idea also torments Seo-ha. When he finds out that Do-yoon has knowledge of the driver involved in the accident, it leads to a verbal and eventually a physical confrontation.

The two reconcile, naturally, and Ji-eum assures Seo-ha that their story won’t end in tragedy. But it’s difficult to make that case when the show is implying it will with such obvious intent.

It might be too soon to tell, but one suspects there is some serious trauma on the horizon for these characters.
