The OA was a Netflix series that generated a lot of discussion when it first came out. It is still possibly one of the best original series on Netflix.

The series explores the return of a blind woman named Praire, who went missing seven years ago. Now she’s in her twenties with her sight restored. While many believe she is a miracle, others worry that she could be dangerous.

Many questions arise with Prairie, which leads to an investigation and the townspeople becoming way too familiar with her. It’s interesting to see why people get involved like they do as the story unfolds over the next two seasons.

The series on the list below all have a mystery to them and put a mirror up to society. They are able to explore the sociopolitical climate and the futuristic possibility of advanced technology. There is some detective work, and the stories are all thrilling with each season.

Devs (2020)

A computer engineer investigates the secretive development division in her company, which she believes is behind the disappearance of her boyfriend. If you’re familiar with director Alex Garland, you know his work goes through layers of psychological and emotional trauma to tell his stories.

Fringe (2008) 

An F.B.I. agent is forced to work with an institutionalized scientist and his son in order to rationalize a brewing storm of unexplained phenomena. Creator J.J. Abrams had a hit on his hands, and the series ran for five seasons.

The Leftovers (2014) 

HBO always has unique stories that have longevity on their platform. Three years after the disappearance of 2% of the global human population, a group of people in a small town in a small New York community try to continue their lives while coping with the tragedy of the unexplained nature of the event.

Maniac (2018) 

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill reunite in this psychological Netflix series. Two strangers are drawn to a mysterious pharmaceutical trial for a drug that they’re assured will, with no complications or side effects whatsoever. The goal is to permanently solve all of their problems. Things do not go as planned.

Russian Doll (2019) 

It’s always great to see Natasha Lyonne in anything, and this series gave her a new wave of fans. A cynical young woman in New York City keeps dying and returning to the party that’s being thrown in her honor on the same evening. She tries to find a way out of this strange time loop.

Twin Peaks: The Return (2017) 

If you’re a fan of David Lynch, then Twin Peaks has always been at the top of your list. You’ve even gone back to watch the series from the beginning again. The Return picks up 25 years after the inhabitants of a quaint northwestern town are stunned when their homecoming queen is murdered.

Awake (2012) 

After a car accident takes the life of a family member, a police detective lives two alternating parallel lives, one with his wife and one with his son. Is one of his realities merely a dream? This is such a heartbreaking series to watch because of the love of a father/husband. How does he split himself to be with his loved ones?

Travelers (2016) 

Hundreds of years from now, surviving humans discover how to send consciousness back through time into people of the 21st century while attempting to change the path of humanity. This was a short-lived series on Netflix and should have had more than two seasons because of how strong the concept was.
