Ever After: A Cinderella Story, known as Ever After, is a romantic comedy-drama film based on the folk and fairy-tale story of Cinderella, which was released in 1998. 

Hollywood’s sweetheart Drew Barrymore plays Danielle, a young woman who is treated as a servant to her stepmother (Anjelica Huston) and step-sisters after her father dies when she’s a small child. Adventurous and charismatic, one day, as she’s exploring, she bumps into Prince Henry, (Dougray Scott) heir to the Kingdom, and he falls in love with her.

As Henry is heir, he is in need of a wife and throws a giant ball in order to help find the woman he fell in love with. Danielle disguises herself and attends the ball, only for her real identity to be discovered. 

This film is a true love story, with beautiful cinematography and an excellent cast who have infectious chemistry. There are also some very comedic moments. If you are a fan of this film, here is a list of ten others you can watch after.

10 Movies Like Ever After

A Cinderella Story (2004)

Similar to Ever After, this film titled A Cinderella Story is another film based around the famous tale, with some modern twists. After Sam’s father dies, her stepmother and stepsisters use and exploit her. Sam confides in an online pen pal, Noman, and agrees to meet him at a school dance. 

Cinderella (2015)

There are many versions based on the tale of Cinderella, and this 2015 version is a great watch if you’re a fan of this story. Similar to Ever After, Ella’s father is killed unexpectedly, and she is abused by her stepmother and stepsisters. However, her life changes forever after dancing with a charming stranger at the Royal Ball.

Stardust (2007)

This film is a wonderful romantic comedy with a star-studded cast (Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Claire Danes, and Charlie Cox, to name a few) and is the perfect film to watch after Ever After.

The story surrounds Tristan, who promises his love he’ll get her a star from the magical kingdom of Stormhold. On his adventure, he finds the star, and it changes his life forever. 

Into the Woods (2014)

This film is for musical fans, as it’s based on the musical of the same name. A baker and his wife wish to have a child, but a curse from evil means they cannot. To stop the curse, they must find four objects the witch needs. 

Emma (2020)

Set in the Georgian Regency era of England, this film has wonderful costumes and a style similar to Ever After. The story surrounds Emma, who is a self-proclaimed matchmaker who meddles in the romantic relationships of her friends. In her matchmaking, she finds a love that has always been around. 

Enchanted (2007)

While Ever After is presented as one world, in Enchanted, the magical world meets real life as Princess Giselle is banished from her kingdom by her lover’s evil stepmother.

She is then transported to the real world, where she meets a lawyer, and they fall in love. 

The Princess Diaries (2001)

Anne Hathaway plays a clumsy teen who, when she turns 16, discovers she is the princess of Genovia. After her father died, this secret has been kept from her, but now her Grandmother must make her into the perfect princess worthy of her title. 

The Princess Bride (1987) 

An absolute classic when it comes to romance and drama films, and a must-watch. A princess called Buttercup is madly in love with a farm boy. Their lives are turned upside down when he searches for employment and is attacked. 

Ella Enchanted (2004)

This is a lovely jukebox musical romance-family film that sees our protagonist Ella cursed to always obey everyone. When she falls in love, she sets out to undo the spell. Similar to the story of Cinderella, Ella has a fairy godmother. After the death of her sole parent (her mother), Ella is forced to live with someone who treats her cruelly.

The Prince & Me (2004)

A romantic comedy is the story of Paige and Eddie, and as Paige falls for him, she learns his parents are the king and queen of Denmark, and he is the heir to the throne. As they come from two opposite worlds, they must decide if their love is one that will last. If you like this film, you’re in luck as there is a series of them out for you to enjoy.
