Summary
See You in My 19th Life loses some of its lightness and charm in exchange for a plottier episode with some key reveals.
This recap of the Netflix K-Drama See You in My 19th Life Season 1 Episode 8 contains spoilers.
The seventh episode of See You in My 19th Life isn’t wildly controversial or anything, but it’s also the point where I feel like fans who are still undecided on the show, or at least not totally invested in it, may jump off.
It’s the tone, I think. Anyway who was enjoying the show’s lighter touch, and some of the warmth in the key pairings, might find less of that here as the story becomes a bit more plotty and a bit less grounded in the interiority of its characters.
See You in My 19th Life Season 1 Episode 8 Recap
Episode 7, you’ll recall, ended with quite the major cliffhanger – did Seo-ha, in Ji-eum’s first life, kill her?
But there are more pressing matters to consider in the meantime, such as the fate of Mr. Bang.
How does Mr. Bang die?
When Seo-ha heads inside the building where he’s designated to meet Mr. Bang, the latter drops from the top of the building to his death. After tussling with the culprits, who flee, Ji-eum also follows Seo-ha inside and sees Bang’s corpse.
The police, thanks to Mun Jeong-hun, quickly declare the incident a suicide. He also offers Ji-eum an envelope full of cash to keep quiet about the incident, which she’s reluctant to do. The whole matter is very obviously suspicious, which doesn’t sit well.
Who was responsible for Ju Won’s death?
Nevertheless, Yang Sik delivers a box of evidence to Seo-ha’s place with a note explaining that Mr. Bang did not kill himself. The evidence reveals that Ji-eum’s father was driving the truck that killed Ju Won in 1998.
Ji-eum also learns this after seeing the papers at Seo-ha’s house during a meal. There’s no love lost between Ji-eum and her father, and when he caused a ruckus earlier she was quick to evict him from the office, so when she confronts him she’s ready to cut off all ties with him.
Obviously, Seo-ha isn’t necessarily thrilled with the connection between Ji-eum and the death of his true love, but his doubts are assuaged when he sees how Ji-eum deals with her father. Earlier, Ji-eum had asked Min-gi if they were lovers in a past life and used the shaman bell to evoke memories of her first life again, during which she’s convinced that Seo-ha was once again her love. It’s destiny, it seems.
Who organized the accident?
This episode at least delivers the major reveal of who within the MI Group organized the accident that claimed Ju Won’s life, especially since we learned from Ji-eum’s father that the brakes were tampered with. Someone made sure the accident took place, and it turns out to be Seo-ha’s uncle, Lee Sang-hyuk.
Ji-eum puts this together, and it’s confirmed for Seo-ha when he tries to dispose of the evidence he was given and a tape recorder falls from the bag. It contains a recording of the accident’s orchestration and he recognizes his uncle’s voice.
See You in My 19th Life Season 1 Episode 8 Ending Explained
It’s while Seo-ha is dealing with this revelation that the episode builds to probably its biggest cliffhanger yet.
At a loss as to how to console Seo-ha, Ji-eum begins playing a song on the piano that Ju Won used to play, reciting words she used to say, proving to Seo-ha irrefutably that she is his lover reincarnated. And that’s where this week’s double-bill elects to end things, presumably leaving audiences with a great deal of anticipation for next week’s episodes.
