Summary
Platonic hasn’t been great, but its finale summons a surprising amount of emotion in a sensible, earned ending that managed to make the best of things.
This recap of Platonic Season 1 Episode 10, “When Will Met Sylvia”, contains spoilers for the ending of Platonic Season 1.
It’s odd that this only really occurred to me at the start of the finale itself, but Platonic isn’t especially well-suited to a finale.
There just hasn’t been much plot, has there? Sure, “When Will Met Sylvia” picks up on some lingering threads that reached a crucial turning point in Episode 9, such as Sylvia and Charlie’s house woes and Will’s relationship with Reggie and Andy, but it doesn’t feel like we’re anywhere close to the end of any of these stories.
That leaves the final half-hour of the season with its work cut out.
Platonic Season 1 Episode 10 Recap
What is wrong with Charlie and Sylvia’s new house?
The good news is that Charlie and Sylvia are able to purchase their dream home. And the only downside is that multiple murders were committed there semi-recently. You can put up with anything for three bathrooms, though.
Charlie and Will do the usual thing and throw a big housewarming party to which almost everyone is invited. Sylvia’s hesitant to invite Will, though, because whenever they’re together they just get carried away and she wants to make a good impression in front of their nice new neighbors.
Of course, Will ends up coming anyway and, of course, he and Sylvia end up getting carried away.
What do Will and Sylvia see on the roof?
After a lighting malfunction, Will and Sylvia head to the roof to repair it. There, they discuss recent developments — Will is now working under the Lucky Penny’s new brewmaster, Omar, and has been offered a job by Johnny Rev that he plans to turn down — until they’re interrupted by what they both believe to be a UFO sighting.
Will is extremely excited by the prospect of extraterrestrial life, so much so that it becomes a little socially embarrassing for Sylvia, who tries to downplay it. Will takes offense to this, and they have a pointless argument about whether she perceives herself to be better than him now that she has managed to buy the house she wanted. Will counters with a reminder that you can’t fix your problems with square footage, some nasty words are exchanged, and Will leaves.
Does Will get a new job?
Sylvia makes amends with Will when she is contacted about being a potential victim in an ongoing case against Johnny Rev, who is all over the media for multiple instances of sexual harassment. Jenna, who we met in Episode 8, is the new CEO, so Sylvia convinces Will to go and take the job he was offered.
Will gets the job, despite some half-truths from Sylvia, but he only considers after that he’ll have to move to San Diego in order to take it. Will and Sylvia both share a moment having lunch after and then driving back home, as they essentially say a silent goodbye. Rose Byrne holding back tears in the car is quietly the best small moment of acting in the entire season.
Platonic Season 1 Ending Explained
“When Will Met Sylvia”, and indeed the freshman season of Platonic, end a year later.
Sylvia is thriving as an events planner, and she has organized Andy and Katie’s wedding. She and Charlie are happy, and still in their dream home. Will attends the wedding with Jenna, who he is now not only living with but is engaged to.
While Will and Sylvia get a brief moment to reminisce about the crazy few months they spent hanging out together while running away from their problems, they both recognize that they were essentially using each other as therapy to avoid having to deal with the parts of their lives that terrified them. They agree that they did see a UFO, though.
Platonic ends with Will asking Sylvia to plan his wedding to Jenna in San Diego, which she happily accepts.
