Summary

Despite a few distracting animation mishaps, the overall ending of the episode is still shocking enough to blow away viewers’ expectations.

We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 2, “The Answer to Everything,” which contains spoilers.

After revealing he was still alive and free, Ranpo (voiced by Hiroshi Kamiya) successfully went on to rescue multiple members of the Armed Detective Agency. While he saved several of them from certain death, it still didn’t solve their problem of being wanted terrorists.

In a last-ditch attempt to prove their innocence, he allowed himself to get arrested at a press conference, but not before revealing he sent evidence to all the major police forces. Here’s hoping his effort is enough to sway the police in their favor as Atsushi (voiced by Yuto Uemura) and the others try to find the notebook page before it’s too late.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 2 Recap

The episode opens with Ranpo in the back of a police car just as someone blows the tires out using a set of spikes thrown into the road.

Ranpo is broken out of police custody by a police officer named Minoura. Ranpo is familiar with the officer from several other cases, including the Kindaichi Murder Case from season four’s A Perfect Murder parts one and two.

Why is Ranpo so willing to trust Fukuchi?

Ranpo explains to Fukuchi that he is willing to trust him because Fukuzawa trusts him wholeheartedly, and Ranpo trusts Fukuzawa.

At first, Fukuchi scolds Ranpo for visiting him with no intention of trying to persuade him to join their side, but his mind changes when Ranpo brings up Fukuzawa.

Who is Kamui?

According to Ranpo, Kamui is Fukuchi, the leader of the Hunting Dogs. After deducing that the culprit must have a connection to the Armed Detective Agency and made money from the terrorist attacks, it only makes sense, but his motivation isn’t immediately apparent.

Bungo Stray Dogs Season 5 Episode 2 Ending Explained

As Fukuchi realizes what Ranpo knows, Ranpo tries to push Atsushi out of the way of an attack before disappearing into one of Poe’s novels. They both know the police will side with Fukuchi and that fighting him is futile, but Atsushi still chooses to fight instead.

Fukuchi then reveals that he has the notebook page and that he has already sliced off Atsushi’s leg while they were speaking.

As Atsushi remembers that Kamui’s ability increases the power of his weapons a hundredfold, he begins to despair and fears ending up alone all over again. The episode ends with security flooding the area while Akutagawa reveals himself as a stowaway on the ship.

Once again, Bungo Stray Dogs delivers a wildly entertaining episode where the best parts are revealed in the last few minutes of the episode. I was once again on the edge of my seat with no idea where this episode was leading, which is a feeling I enjoy.

I never would’ve guessed that Fukuchi and Kamui were the same, even with the amount of screen time he got in this episode. I genuinely thought he was an ally, and I always enjoy how this series manages to turn everything on its head.

READ: Will there be a Bungo Stray Dogs Season 6?

If I had one complaint, it would be about the animation in the middle of the episode. Specifically, the scene where Ranpo and Fukuchi spoke. It appeared very stagnant, lingering on the same frames while they exchanged quite a bit of dialogue.

Occasionally, you see animes do that to save money on the budget. I don’t like to nitpick, especially when it’s clear they put a lot of effort into animating the more intense scenes, but in this moment, it felt too obvious, not to mention. While it doesn’t take away from the experience as a whole, during that scene, it was a bit distracting.
