Summary
To say that “A Game of Telephone” is the penultimate episode in the series it’s another uneventful and tedious installment. The series has many great messages, but these important life lessons get lost in the endless, unremarkable subplots.

In the penultimate episode of the series, “A Game of Telephone,” the Sweet Magnolias deliver their pitch to the interfaith council for their foundation plans. Kyle (Logan Allen) discovers just who his secret admirer is while planning the playground renovation. Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) and Helen (Heather Headley) organized Dana Sue’s (Brooke Elliott) vow renewal ceremony.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 9 Recap
The Sweet Magnolias trio are all back to being the best of friends once again. They meet up for another margarita night to celebrate.
Dana Sue reveals that the vow renewal event has been canceled due to financial issues. She confesses that Ronnie paid off his sister Kathy, on the basis that she would then leave town.

Maddie and Helen propose a smaller gathering instead, one which is more cost-effective. Dana Sue isn’t entirely against the plan, but they are unsure how to proceed with the cake.
The town’s most talented cake maker Erik is currently on bad terms with both Helen and Dana Sue. Maddie suggests finding another cake maker in his place.
Next, they decide to rehearse their pitch for the interfaith council. While Maddie brings up another issue. Cal has been messaged by his ex, Vicky. They are all meeting up for what is sure to be an awkward meal.
Why does Vicky get in touch with Cal?
At this dinner, Maddie and Cal discover that Vicky is engaged to Drew. The meal is Vicky’s way of getting Cal’s blessings on the marriage, but really, she wants to show off. Cal tells Vicky that he is a carpenter now, and Vicky gloats about her amazing life with Drew. Maddie tells Vicky in private that Cal is over her, putting Vicky in her place.
Who is Kyle’s secret admirer?
Elsewhere, Kyle plans the playground renovations with the other classmates. He proposes a fundraiser event to raise cash. Tyler and CeCe offer to go to the interim mayor as well. It’s clear that Lily likes Kyle, and she eventually admits that she is his secret admirer. The couple plans their first date together.
Noreen goes to Helen about her situation with Bill. They have an informal agreement with regard to child support, and Bill’s name isn’t even on Rebecca’s birth certificate.
Helen thinks that seeking legal advice could be a lengthy and challenging undertaking. She dissuades Noreen from proceeding.
Meanwhile, Maddie and Helen start to organize Dana Sue’s vow renewal. They offer to pay for services, but all the townsfolk want to help out for free. In return, they want to attend the event. The guest list slowly starts to creep up.
What is the Serenity Serves Initiative?
The trio then pitch the Serenity Serves Initiative to the interfaith council. Dana Sue explains how the Magnolia Community Foundation will offer nutritious, low-cost, tasty meals to the community. The council votes and they all agree to support the initiative.
The ladies go out to celebrate. Maddie and Helen confess to the ever-growing guest list. There are between 50 and 60 people on the list so far, and they now have a new venue for the event too.
Dana Sue is shocked but excited about the ceremony.
Sweet Magnolias Season 3 Episode 9 Ending Explained
As the episode nears its end, Tyler visits Helen. They discuss college and friendships. Tyler admits that he doesn’t want to go to college anymore. He has far too many other options on his mind. Helen suggests that he chat with his mom about this revelation. Maddie has plans of her own. She wants to write a book for her daughter and asks Paula to draw the illustrations.
The episode ends with both Dana Sue and Helen contemplating getting in contact with Erik. Both individuals have had their issues with Erik in the past, but hopefully, they can overlook these grievances and make the right choices going forward.
