Here is our review of the 2023 Netflix animated series Captain Fall Season 1, which does not contain any significant spoilers.
Netflix has a habit of releasing adult animated series. It’s no surprise; the production is more straightforward than a multi-million-pound series spreading across many locations, and if they get one hit, then the money follows.
However, I couldn’t count on one hand how many times I’ve been impressed with Netflix’s offering in this genre. It’s very hit-and-miss.
Captain Fall Season 1 Review and Plot Summary
With Captain Fall, I was surprised. Not only do we have a genuinely funny Netflix original animated series, but the jokes do not attempt to hold back for sensitive audiences.
The plot is quite whacky, too; Jonathan Fall (voiced by Jason Ritter) is a hopeful man who wants to be a naval captain. However, he’s frankly a disappointment to his family. The family name holds weight, yet Jonathan cannot acquire the test scores to captain a ship.
That’s until a criminal gang needing a new captain for their corrupt holiday cruise comes along and recruits Jonathan due to his naiveness and incompetence. They believe they can be in control of a captain who has fewer brain cells. Lo and behold, the origin story of Captain Jonathan Fall.
There’s a quirkiness to Captain Fall that persuades viewers to binge the animated series. The jokes land well, with credit to the writing team, who are against many similar animated series. The writing holds weight. It’s not outlandish for no reason, and the characters have reasonable angles for their jokes.
Is Captain Fall Season 1 good or bad?
Longevity is key, and an animated series about a sea captain may not feel like it has a long shelf life. But I believe this series does.
After all, the series can move anywhere on its current premise, so if Netflix deems the watch-hours successful, we could see many more seasons.
Is Captain Fall Season 1 worth watching?
If you want a genuine laugh in this crime-infested and delusionally-led comedy series, then this series is one of the few surprises this year.
