There’s a 2023 Netflix animated show available to watch right now with an interesting and unique premise.
The show was created by Jon Iver Helgaker, Jonas Torgersen, and Joel Trussell, who you might recognize as the team behind Norsemen, and features a great voice cast that includes Jason Ritter as the titular Captain.
The story follows a rookie sea captain who finds himself at the wheel of a ship that is being used by a cartel of criminals for smuggling. The unwitting Captain is being used by the cartel and is unaware that if the operation is uncovered, he is going to take the fall.
The show focuses on the characters and the situation, and unlike some other animated shows, it is grounded in its situation, not going for cheap laughs or gross-out humor or veering off into surrealist territory.

Who is Liza in Captain Fall and why is she important?
Liza is one of our lead characters in the show and is, in fact, first mate to the Captain. Liza is a no-nonsense, straight-talking character that brings another element to the show. Her strong personality and air of mystery play well off the Captain, and she has to make sure that he never finds out about the cartel and their operation on the ship,
Volatile and dangerous, Liza walks a thin line on the ship and is pretty much in control of the events that are unfolding. Liza is no pushover and is prepared to go to any lengths in her position on the operation.
She is no stranger to extreme violence and is a feared and aggressive agent of the cartel.
However, as the series progresses, we do get to see a softer side of the character, and despite her initial recourse about the mission, she does seem to genuinely become more empathic towards Jonathon. Liza’s character is complex and important to the overall arc of the characters and plot of the show.

Liza is played by the South African-born Lesley-Ann Brandt.
What is Lesley-Ann Brandt known for?
You might remember Lesley-Ann from eleven episodes of Single Ladies in 2014. She would feature in an episode of Gotham later that year, too, as well as appearing in five episodes of Indiana Jones knock-off The Librarian between 2014 and 2015.
From 2016 to 2021, Lesley-Ann would make her mark in the hit TV series Lucifer, and sticking with a horror theme she would appear in the horror anthology movie Black Noire in 2021.
In Captain Fall, Lesley-Ann’s voice talent adds depth and layers to Liza, making her the perfect casting for the character.
