We discuss whether there will be a Season 2 of the Netflix animation series Captain Fall and its renewed or canceled status.
In the animated series Captain Fall, which premiered on Netflix on July 28, hopeful-yet-naïve Captain Jonathan Fall fails in his mission of becoming a naval captain, which then complicates his job hunt.
Meanwhile, the top minds of a smuggling and human trafficking organization decide to offer him the job of captain of their corrupt holiday cruise, hoping they will be able to control him due to his incompetence after the last captain they hired got arrested.
As their criminal activities pile on, they will start to incriminate Jonathan, who is unaware of all of it.
The series hails from Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, creators of the Norwegian comedy series Norsemen.
The duo initially pitched the idea as a live-action series, but Netflix came back to them with the proposal of turning it into an animated show; as Torgersen told Variety back in 2020, “At first, it was a bit difficult to wrap our heads around, but I think now we are thankful for doing it animated because it’s pretty much limitless.”

August 1st, 2023 Update
Since our original update, we’ve received some more concrete information. Our sources tell us that Netflix initially commissioned the series as one block of episodes, not two seasons. We understand that the second season will NOT be released in the next few months.
Production was finalized two years ago, and there have been no further updates on continuing work on the series since. It seems very likely, as things stand, that there will not be a second season of Captain Fall.
July 29th, 2023 Update
In 2020, Netflix ordered 20 episodes of the animated series that would be released in two parts; the 10 episodes we’ve seen are the first part. We expect that the second half of the season will premiere within the next few months, probably towards the beginning of the next year. Netflix has yet to announce a specific date
Moreover, while it’s still a bit early to tell, as the series just came out, the response has been mostly positive. Our review said that “there’s a quirkiness to Captain Fall that persuades viewers to binge the animated series.”
As of this writing, it holds a 69% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and 6.6/10 on IMDb out of 130 user reviews. But much like Big Mouth or Inside Job, Captain Fall on Netflix has the potential to start recruiting a larger audience as people catch up with it and start talking about it and recommending it to their friends.
Its second season will certainly help with that.
As far as the potential story, it’s clear that Jonathan will eventually win the day, but we suspect some dark places await him on his journey to take down the criminal empire that is his employer.
His confrontation with Agent Steel will be the kick-off point of the second season and of the second half of his arc.
How many episodes of Captain Fall are there?
At this moment in time, there are only ten episodes, but initially, 20 were planned. However, our sources confirm that it’s looking highly unlikely that there will be 20 episodes as the show is likely to be canceled.
