Summary
Geto’s demise, though heartbreaking to watch, is perfectly animated in this harrowing conclusion to the anime’s Gojo’s Past Arc.
We recap the Crunchyroll anime series Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5, “Premature Death,” which contains spoilers.
In episode four, fans witnessed exactly what makes Gojo (voiced by Yuichi Nakamura) the best Jujutsu sorcerer as he stretched himself past his limits to bring himself back from the brink of death and defeat Toji.
While Geto (voiced by Takahiro Sakurai) seemed to be the voice of reason, preventing Gojo from massacring the members of the Star Religious Group, it was clear that their differing ideals were beginning to reach a point of no return.
With only one episode left in the Gojo’s past arc, it will be interesting to see just what the catalyst that sets Geto down the darker path and permanently changes his relationship with Gojo forever.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5 Recap
The episode takes place one year later, in August of 2007. Gojo shows Shoko and Geto his new technique of automatically discerning which threats are most important, prioritizing those while keeping his Limitless technique at the same time.
Geto comments on how Gojo has now become the “strongest” on his own, while he is wondering who he’s even still a sorcerer for.
Who is Yuki Tsukomo?
Yuki Tsukomo is a special-grade sorcerer with a reputation for never taking on any missions. She disagrees with Jujutsu High’s methods and seeks to create a world where cursed spirits are never born instead of exorcised.
How does Yu Haibara die?
Yu Haibara dies on what was supposed to be an easy mission to eliminate a grade 2 cursed spirit. According to Nanami, the cursed spirit had been made the deity of the nearby people making its power equal to that of a grade 1 curse instead.
Although Gojo raises his hands to kill Geto in Shinjuku, he is unable to follow through as Geto is his friend. He later admits to Yaga that he can only save those who are ready to be saved by another.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5 Ending Explained
Geto returns to the Star Religious Group, looking for a place to gather curses and money. He tells the group they will follow him under a new name but many object, so he kills one of them to set an example.
Years later, Gojo locates Toji’s son, Megumi, noting how much they look alike. He begins explaining Megumi’s powers and his father’s past, but Megumi is uninterested, already concluding he was abandoned.
When Gojo asks if he wants to be sold to the Zenin clan, Megumi says he will only do it if it benefits his sister. Knowing it won’t, Gojo says he understands and will handle it.
The episode ends in the present, with Gojo waking up to see his students, Megumi, Yuji, and Nobara.
Although most fans already knew how badly things would play out in this episode, it was much different seeing these moments animated.
One of the best things about this episode was the way they slowly illustrated Geto’s spirit sort of fracturing. You could see it in him physically but also hear it in the constant callbacks to the Star Religious Group’s applauding last episode or the build-up in the music. As a viewer, it helped to put you in his shoes as you watched him become closer to breaking, which was an almost heartbreaking touch.
Despite how intense the episode was, it was nice to finally connect the past and the present. While we already knew how Gojo and Geto’s story ended, seeing how it began really helped their relationship’s demise to make more sense. This arc added some much-needed closure to their storyline, and MAPPA handled it well.
