Wake Up Sid is the 2009 Indian Hindi-language coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by Hiroo Yash Johar and Karan Johar under Dharma Productions.

This rom-com tells the story of Siddharth Mehra, a spoiled, rich, and selfish college student who can’t last longer than a week in a job. He learns the meaning of life and the importance of responsibility from Aisha, an aspiring writer from Kolkata.

While he’s falling for Aisha and wanting more than friendship, his slacker, loser personality puts her off. This might be the kick he needs to shake up and grow up.

This romance drama tells the story of an aspiring actor, Vikram, who wishes to make it big in Bollywood. Student of the Year (2012)

Similar to Wake Up Sid, this film is an Indian Hindi-language romantic comedy and tells the story of two friends, Abhimanyu and Rohan.

However, their friendship is affected after they compete to win a title and Abhimanyu falls in love with Shanaya, Rohan’s girlfriend. There is a Student of the Year 2 to watch as well if you’re a fan of this film. 

The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)

This coming-of-age film is based on the novel written by Stephen Chbosky and tells the story of 15-year-old Charlie (Logan Lerman), an endearing and naive outsider, coping with a new school, falling in love, and his family dramas.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

This film is for musical fans. The story is about three close friends who are separated after college due to their different approaches toward relationships. There are themes of friendship, romance, love, and self-discovery. 

Pyaar Impossible! (2010)

Geeky Abhay falls in love with college hottie Alisha and shies away when he realizes she’s unattainable. Seven years later, in Singapore, they are reunited, and he takes the role of her nanny In order to be close to her. Starring Priyanka Chopra and Uday Chopra, this rom-com isn’t one to miss. 

3 Idiots (2009)  

This film stars Aamir Khan, R Madhavan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Sharman Joshi and is inspired by Chetan Bhagat’s book ‘Five Point Someone’. It showcases friendship and college life and pokes fun at the Indian education system. What makes it good is that it’s narrated through parallel scenes, one in the present and one ten years in the past. 

Dreamfactory (2019)

This dreamy romantic drama is set in 1961 and follows a young studio extra’s ambitious efforts to reunite with the French girl he loves after being separated by the construction of the Berlin Wall. 

He’s Just Not That Into You (2009) 

This film follows multiple storylines of four men and five women in Baltimore struggling to keep their love lives alive. Each one of them experiences heartbreak and tries to deal with the complexities of relationships. 

With a star-studded stellar cast, this film will have you laughing and crying. 

500 Days of Summer (2009)

This is a personal favorite when it comes to comedy and romantic drama films as it’s very relatable, feels fresh, and it’s charming to watch. The story surrounds Tom revisiting the one year he shared with Summer, a girl he felt he could spend the rest of his life with. She, on the other hand, does not believe in relationships or boyfriends.

Similar to Wake Up Sid, our protagonist is rejected by someone he fancies/loves, and it is a wake-up call. It has similar themes, such as love, relationships, friendships, and self-discovery. 

Half Girlfriend (2017) 

This rom-com is about a boy who meets a girl named Riya and falls in love. He struggles to convince her to be his girlfriend, but she’s not interested romantically, so she halfheartedly agrees to be his ‘half-girlfriend’. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Chetan Bhagat.
