Beowulf is the 2007 fantasy adventure film starring Ray Winstone, Anthony Hopkins, Robin Wright, and John Malkovich. The film is based on an Old English epic poem of the same name and surrounds the story of a fierce warrior called Beowulf, who is sent to Denmark to protect it from a hideous monster called Grendel.

On a mission to defeat him, Grendel’s mother finds out she swears vengeance against him. 

The film has unique visuals and animation, which might be hard to wrap your head around, but if you can get past it, the cast gives excellent performances, and there are many dramatic action sequences. If you enjoyed Beowulf, here is a list of ten similar films to watch.

Beowulf & Grendel (2005)  

Similar to Beowulf, this film is also based on the famous poem, so if you enjoyed the storyline, this film is worth watching. Here we see the Danish king (Stellan Skarsgard) who recruits a foreign warrior (Gerard Butler) to battle the vengeful son (Ingvar E. Sigurdsson) of a slaughtered troll. 

Troy (2004)

This film is long at over three hours but worth investing your time in if you’re a fan of action, fantasy, and Brad Pitt. The story surrounds a Trojan prince, who has an affair with Menelaus’s wife, Helen, and decides to take her with him. Later, Menelaus’s brother uses that as an excuse to wage a war against the city of Troy.

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Loosely based on a Greek myth, this film sees Perseus, a demigod and son of Zeus, embark on an adventure to kill Hades. Hades threatens to release the monstrous Kraken on Earth if his demands are not met.

The Mummy (1999)

A great adventure/horror franchise you should watch if you haven’t already. The film surrounds adventurer Rick O’Connell and Egyptologist Evelyn, with more unlikely friends, who inadvertently wake up an evil mummy during an archaeological excavation at the ancient city of Hamunaptra.

With the world at stake, they must defeat this mummy before it’s too late. 

Constantine (2005)

Constantine is a supernatural exorcist and demonologist who helps a policewoman investigate her twin sister’s death to prove it was not a suicide. As they dig deeper, Constantine realizes a dark conspiracy that could threaten the world. Starring Keanu Reeves and Rachel Weisz, it’s a thoroughly enjoyable action-fantasy film. 

The Scorpion King (2002)

This is the film franchise for you if you enjoy sword and sorcery action. Starring Dwayne Johnson, Steven Brand, Kelly Hu, Grant Heslov, and Michael Clarke Duncan, it is both a prequel and spin-off of The Mummy franchise.

The story follows an assassin called Mathayus, who is hired by the leaders of the free tribes to stop Memnon, an evil king, from demolishing their land.

Stardust (2007)

A wonderful story by Neil Gaiman, audiences go on a magical adventure with Tristan, who promises his love he’ll get her a star from the kingdom of Stormhold. Tristan ends up on an adventure that changes his life as the star is not only sought out by him. 

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) 

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is an epic high fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson and based on the book The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.

There are three films in this franchise telling the story of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit who is persuaded into accompanying a wizard and a large group of dwarves on a journey to reclaim the city of Erebor and retrieve all its riches from the dangerous dragon Smaug. 

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

Probably the best adventure-fantasy franchise of all time. The Lord of the Rings is a series of three epic fantasy films directed by Peter Jackson, based on the books by J. R. R. Tolkien.

The story surrounds the adventures of Frodo Baggins as he takes on the momentous task of taking the one ring to Mount Doom to be destroyed. Starting with 11 companions, their journey takes many twists and turns as they navigate the lands filled with spies from the evil Sauron, who wants the ring for himself. 

The 13th Warrior (1999)

This storyline is a mix of Ibn Fadlan’s accounts with Beowulf and a few H.G. Wells’ Morlocks and sees a cultured diplomat join a band of warriors to battle a supernatural enemy. The film is filled with action and drama and is one to watch after Beowulf.
