Red, White & Royal Blue is an American romantic comedy film directed by Matthew Lopez, co-written with Ted Malawer, which is now available for streaming on Prime Video. The film is based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Casey McQuiston and has been welcomed by fans and critics alike.

The film follows the story of a secret romance between the son of the President of the United States, Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), and the Prince of England Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). The two young lovers are high profile and have been embroiled in a feud since childhood. At a special royal event, the boys end up in a brawl covered in cake, causing an international scandal. The two have to work together to do some serious damage control and make the public think they are friends. However, their friendship turns into a steamy love story — but if this is made public it could have irreversible political consequences.

Who are Alex and Henry in Red, White & Royal Blue?

Alex Claremont-Diaz, played by Taylor Zakhar Perez (The Kissing Booth 2 and The Kissing Booth 3), is the son of the President of the United States, Ellen Claremont, and Senator Oscar Diaz. Alex is the first son of the United States and part of the White House Trio with his elder sister June Claremont-Diaz and Nora Holleran.

Prince Henry Fox-Mountchristen-Windsor is the son of Catherine, Princess of Wales, and actor Arthur Fox. He is the younger brother of Prince Philip and the elder brother of Princess Beatrice. His character is played by Nicholas Galitzine known for films including High Strung and Handsome Devil

In the beginning, the two make dramatic headlines as if they are enemies, and the boys have to become friends to resolve the controversy. In this process, the two begin to fall for one another. The main thing standing between them is their politics and their futures. It is implied the two may not work out — when their private, personal emails are leaked, all communication between the two is stopped. 

This leads Alex to make the dramatic decision to address the public, hoping his message is heard by Henry. Alex confirms their relationship and how they have both been outed without their consent. This stirs the Royal Family who want some damage control. Alex and Henry are finally reunited, when Alex flies over to see his lover. 

The King implies the people will never accept Henry, however, crowds are cheering for the lovers outside. The film ends with the boys across the pond in the States, making public press, and taking the first steps toward the happily ever after. 

Does Red, White & Royal Blue have a happy ending? 

Yes, Red, White & Royal Blue has a happy ending. Even though the boys have multiple setbacks in their relationship and a serious push-back from the crown, the film ends with our lover-boys heading to Alex’s childhood home to celebrate his mother’s victory. Here, the two start their happily ever after together. It’s an incredibly sweet and wholesome ending.
