Summary

Female friendships and womanhood are explored through romantic relationships and the deadline of turning thirty.

Here is our review of the 2023 South African Netflix movie Love, Sex and 30 Candles, which does not contain spoilers.

There are moments that define us in life, and one of those moments can be defining what a relationship means to you. The company you keep and the love that you choose to keep around are important things in your life.

Once the age of 30 begins to creep up on women, it’s always difficult for them to process where they are in their lives. The timeline is the thing that kills many women mentally because they should be married by that time with a child on the way, a stable job, and a homeowner. Realistically, it’s hard for any of that to be accomplished in this day and age because of many factors.

Movies like Love, Sex and 30 Candles are important for women, especially to not feel alone while they are going through this process. All women can go through something different at each stage of their lives, but it’s important for them to know that everyone else is going through something similar.

Sharing these stories and allowing women to open up to be themselves with all of their concerns helps so much. Everything may look perfect, but it can be far from it.

Love, Sex and 30 Candles Review and Plot Summary

Love, Sex and 30 Candles is directed by Stephina Zwane, and the film is about a group of four close friends who are approaching their thirties. This is an exploration of friendship and love while navigating how difficult womanhood can be.

Each woman has their own relationships with the men in their life, but as their birthdays all approach, they begin to reflect on their decisions because they are getting older. One woman breaks off her engagement because the love is no longer mutual, another woman wants to be deeply loved, and her man doesn’t give his full self to her, and two other friends keep choosing the wrong man to be with.

Even though they all show that they are unbothered by their decisions to put up that facade of independence, it’s still hard for them not to be vulnerable in front of each other. One particular situation becomes difficult between one couple who have a child, and they are trying to work through their relationship because he is constantly leaving her.

What this film shows is the constant strength that women have to harness when dealing with situations that really shouldn’t be happening to them because certain men act on impulses.

Is Love, Sex and 30 Candles good or bad?

This is a beautiful film about womanhood and female friendships. The women in the film share advice with each other on how to get through certain situations because everyone has their own opinions.

The important thing is that life doesn’t end at 30, and women especially shouldn’t think of it as a deadline. It does fall into generic territory with the romance tropes, but the message of humans learning and growing as the years go on is valuable. It is a good movie because of how these women come together to share their stories and how each of them connects to each other.

Is Love, Sex and 30 Candles worth watching?

Love, Sex and 30 Candles is worth the watch because of how well-written each character is and how intricate their relationships become. There are many different ways one’s life can unfold, and they show variations in this film. Love is complicated and relationships can be extremely difficult.

That’s why it’s impossible for people to get everything settled by their thirties. There is so much to learn from this group of friends, and that’s why it’s good.
