Summary
“Candy’s Room” is a mixed bag overall. The friendship between the leading teens continues to have its moments, and Spoon provides ample amounts of comedy gold. But the show is still hindered by illogical storytelling, lazy writing, and these cliched, ridiculous big reveals.
We recap the 2023 Prime Video series Harlan Coben’s Shelter Season 1 Episode 6, “Candy’s Room,” which contains spoilers.
One of the quirks of Harlan Coben’s Shelter is the outlandish character names. The first season includes doozies such as Bat Lady (Tovah Feldshuh), Sunglasses Man (Hunter Emery), and Octoface (Manuel Uriza), oh, and one of our leading teens even decides to nickname himself Spoon.
In “Candy’s Room,” we finally get to find out just who Sunglasses Man really is.

After a failed stakeout, Mickey returns home. Hannah spent the night with Shira and must hide from Mickey as he wanders in without an excuse. Shira is frustrated with Mickey’s secrecy and bans any future sleepovers.
Luckily, the teenager doesn’t discover Shira’s own secret relationship though.

Mickey still hasn’t found Ashley and has no further answers about his father, so he decides he wants Brad’s body exhumed. He needs to know if his dad is really gone forever. Shira asks Hannah for help getting Brad’s body dug up legally. Shira has her doubts herself; she wants to know as much as Mickey.
The teen trio then reunites, following Octoface was a dead end, and they have no idea what to do about Dr. Kent. They decide to attend Dylan’s memorial, hoping that the kidnapper will show their face there.
At school, things are awkward between Ema and Whitney. Buck makes a morning announcement, telling everyone about Ema’s secrets, mainly that her mother is the celebrity Angelica Wyatt. Spoon uses this as an opportunity to punch Buck in the face. Ema is heartbroken; she runs away.
Why did Whitney betray Ema?
Spoon is suspended because of this, and Ema argues with Whitney about the betrayal. Whitney explains the reasons why she told Buck in the first place. Buck was blackmailing his sister; he knew that she had bought her first 500k followers with stolen money. He asked for dirt on Ema in return for his silence. This is why Whitney betrayed Ema. After the explanation, Ema orders Whitney to stay away from her.
At the memorial, Ken confronts Shira. Hannah has asked him for a divorce, and he wants Shira to talk to her on his behalf. Shira refuses to get involved.
Troy notices this odd interaction. Mrs. Friedman then makes a speech. Mickey spots a strange man at the back of the church. While Mrs Friedman spies Billy Shakes (Dylan’s father) sat in the audience.

Mrs. Friedman and Billy argue outside the memorial. She is told the horrifying truth behind Dylan’s disappearance. Meanwhile, Mickey speaks with the stranger, who happens to be Dr. Kent, Dylan’s doctor. Mickey is also updated on Dylan’s painful past.
Who is Sunglasses Man?
It’s an eventful memorial, next Mickey spots Luther and chases after him, but he soon loses him. Then Mickey meets with Sunglasses Man. He’s finally worked out Sunglasses Man’s true identity, he is Dylan Shakes. Mickey was told the truth about Dylan and has joined the dots, there is a reason after all why this strange man wears sunglasses all the time.
The adult Dylan recounts his terrifying story. Dylan’s father stubbed out a cigarette in his eye. After this abuse, he ran away to Bat Lady’s house. Bat Lady saved him with Brad’s help.
Together, they all rescued many more children in return, under the name Abeona.

After this revelation, Mickey decides to press on with his investigation. He heads into the seedy nightclub to look for Ashley again. The bouncers quickly spot Mickey, though, and chase after him. A dancer called Candy leads Mickey to safety, though.
Where is Ashley being kept?
Candy tells Mickey that she knows all about Ashley; they have worked together at the club. Ashley is down in the dungeon, ready to be trafficked once again. Candy guides Mickey down to the dungeon, but it is a trap. Mickey is captured. Another woman double-bluffs Mickey, who thinks he’s been rescued, and then he is bundled in the back of a van.
Elsewhere, Spoon and Ema have a heart-to-heart after Ema’s traumatic day. And Shira meets with Hannah. They discuss the exhumation and Hannah’s divorce. Hannah confesses that she loves Shira and wants to be with her.

Bat Lady and Mrs Friedman also meet. Billy told Mrs. Friedman the truth about Dylan Shakes, too. Bat Lady admits that she saved Dylan and that he is still alive. Mrs. Friedman and Dylan are then reunited.
It is an emotional reunion. The episode ends with Mickey being dragged to a beach at night. He fights the gunmen and escapes with the old sand-in-the-eye trick.
