Why was How I Met Your Father Season 3 cancelled

Why was How I Met Your Father Season 3 cancelled? We discuss the Hulu series and the reasons behind its cancellation.

How I Met Your Mother was a hugely popular and successful sitcom that had a great premise and a strong cast and followed in the footsteps of shows such as Friends and Two and a Half Men.

The show would run from 2005 and lasted till 2014, with an impressive two hundred and eight episodes over nine seasons.

Of course, it would not be long before the powers that be would decide a spin-off should follow, replaying similar beats from the original series in the hope of re-creating the magic of the first run. However, two seasons are down, and it appears that the show has been canceled.

Fans are keen to get the inside story on the show’s demise, but information on the subject is vague. We have had a look at what is available and tried to offer some clarity on the issue, so if you are curious about the show, then this article will answer the question of why How I Met Your Father Season 3 was canceled.

Are they doing a Season 3 of How I Met Your Father?

No. The show is canceled. The sitcom would do its best to emulate the success of the first show, this time following Sophie and her group of friends in Manhattan.

In a similar framing device to the first show, Sophie, in the year 2050, is explaining to her son, whom we never see, how she met his father in 2022.

With a strong cast including Hilary Duff and Kim Cattrall, it was a bit of a shock when the news dropped, but the show has indeed been dumped, and there will not be a season three in the near future.

Why was How I Met Your Father Season 3 cancelled?

So there have been rumors and gossip, but no real confirmation of a reason why the show has been dropped. However, there are a couple of obvious points that we can refer to. First of all, despite the careful attention taken to replicate the success of the OG series, it simply was not as popular.

How I Met Your Mother has an impressive 8.3/10 on IMDb, with the spin-off only managing to scrape a 5.7/10, so there seems to be less love for the show than probably expected. The show also suffered on Rotten Tomatoes, with some terribly low scores, but perhaps you could take that with a pinch of salt.

Scathing reviews label the show bland, and others would unfortunately conclude that Hilary Duff does not have the comedy pedigree to carry the project.

It also has to be mentioned that the show may not have been as funny as How I Met Your Mother, but it was still expensive to produce, which is always a factor, especially if your show is not performing as well as it should.

However, the elephant in the room is obviously the writers’ and actor’s strike that, at the time of writing, is still ongoing. Making television is pretty much like a factory, and when something intrinsically goes wrong with the machinery, then the product is going to suffer.

With the writers’ strike ensuring that no new material is prepared, obviously, this show, and I have no doubt many others, will fall behind schedule, meaning that it is going to be difficult to continue going forward with them.

Add that to the growing demands of actors in these types of shows, including requests for more money, and it begins to look obvious why cancellation was the viable course of action for the production company.

If your TV show demands more money for all involved, then your show has to be of the highest standard, with a huge audience and support from the great viewing public, and it seems this show did not have that and has unfortunately been canceled.

Will the show be revived after the strike?

There is still a chance. If you are a fan of the show, then hope that the current situation will be resolved soon, but it does appear that the longer this goes on, the worse it will be for shows that have been canceled.

For a property such as this to survive cancellation and be revived in its current format, it would take a very specific set of circumstances, and at this point, I would have to sadly say that it looks like this show may finish with the premise left unsatisfyingly unanswered.
