Summary

Sophie struggles with emotional intimacy and gets advice from a familiar face.

This recap of Hulu’s How I Met Your Father season 1, episode 10 — the finale and ending explained — contains spoilers.

You’d be forgiven for assuming that Sid and Jesse’s apartment would be the extension of How I Met Your Father’s tie-ins to its parent series, but the season’s final episode aspires to make that original show the backbone of this week’s emotional journey. And for the most part, it works, even if the Captain business seems too far a reach (although I will never say no to Kyle MacLachlan on our screens).

A major problem of the show when comparing it to Mother is that since most of the characters are in relationships, almost every episode has at least one plotline where they have some falling out and then reconcile at the end. Here we have Sid and Hannah, worried about the rising cost of two weddings, decide to get married right away, while Charlie and Valentina end up breaking up because she really wants kids and he doesn’t, which feels awfully soon, but hopefully will allow them to have more adventures next season. It looks like Ellen will go into next season in a relationship having taken in a cat that turns out to be Rachel’s, giving her a window into a second chance (and a job as well, so hopefully she can actually have some interesting storylines).

Following off from last week’s episode, it turns out that Jesse didn’t abandon Sophie, he was just late (could have texted!). He admits that he saw Meredith, but wants to be with Sophie, and the two end up sleeping together. But when Jesse sleep-mumbles “I love you, Sophie,” she gets freaked out, leading to Jesse admitting that he turned down Meredith’s invitation to go on tour. This only worries her even more, afraid of commitment, so she walks out.

Sophie ends up at the bar downstairs where the familiar face of Robin Sherbatsky greets her. Cobie Smulders is always excellent in my opinion, although it’s pretty trite that Sophie is a “fan” of hers? What thirty-year-old has a favorite newscaster? Robin sits Sophie down to listen to her woes and offers her advice; don’t make decisions out of fear. Realizing that her fear of being in a relationship, of messing something up, is preventing her from being with Jesse, she goes upstairs but is too late, Jesse is kissing Meredith.

She runs down again to find Robin, who tells her that this wasn’t the point. She may not be with Jesse, but she was able to overcome her fear. And it should all work out for her, given that this Captain divorce situation entails that a certain Tinder match’s research boat no longer has funding (really wasn’t necessary to tell his story but ah well). And so we end the season with a bit of promise for Sophie, although it would help if we knew more about Ian (or if she did! she’s barely met him in person).

Well with that underwhelming business, How I Met Your Father has set itself up for a second season, which we can only pray is less painful than the first.
