While most romantic comedy anime are wholesome or sweet, Masamune-kun’s Revenge R dares to do something different. It takes the standard tropes and gives them a new twist, focusing more on how to sabotage a relationship than how to start one. However, just because Makabe Masamune’s plan isn’t to fall in love doesn’t mean he can escape it. If you’re looking for a romantic comedy series that doesn’t follow all the rules, here are 10 anime series like Masamune-kun’s Revenge that you may enjoy.
10 Anime Shows like Masamune-kun's Revenge R
Kaguya-Sama: Love is War (2019)
Easily one of the best romantic comedies of recent times, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War is the perfect mix of comedy, drama, and romance.
Like Masamune-kun’s Revenge, the series is focused on a couple struggling to accept their feelings for one another while using schemes to try and make the other fall in love.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU (2013)
Like Masamune, Hachiman Hikigaya is a jaded high schooler whose previous experiences have turned him off of joy and relationships. If your favorite part of Masamune-kun’s Revenge was the bristly dynamic between Aki and Masamune, you’ll enjoy seeing Hikigaya and his classmate, Yukino Yukinoshita, butt heads as well.
Kiss Him, Not Me (2016)
This reverse harem anime follows Kae Serinuma, an otaku with an affinity for boys love of manga, who, after shedding a serious amount of weight, finds herself on the radar of the most desirable boys in school.
While it’s interesting to see two series that focus so heavily on the effects of weight loss, Kae takes her newfound popularity in stride. She’s not so much interested in revenge as she is in seeing the boys around her end up with each other.
Nisekoi (2014)
In this offbeat romance series, Raku Ichijou is the heir to a yakuza empire who finds himself in a pretend relationship with a rival gang’s daughter.
While its premise is quite different, its storytelling style is similar to Masamune-kun’s as it focuses on how the characters’ childhood relationships affect their lives now.
Toradora (2008)
Fans of anime romance know that Toradora is one of the classics. Like Aki, Taiga Aisaka is a girl with a prickly reputation for being all but unapproachable.
However, her classmate, Ryuuji Takasu, sees a bit of her softer side revealed when he learns she has a crush on his best friend. Since he also has a crush on her best friend, it makes sense that they help one another out, almost like Masamune and Yoshino.
The Dangers in My Heart (2023)
This unique series surprised viewers by being one of the best breakout rom-coms of the year. In it, unassuming middle school student Kyoutarou Ichikawa has a dark secret: he often fantasizes about taking classmate Anna Yamada’s life.
He would love nothing more than to hurt her, but as he begins spending time with her, his feelings shift dramatically as he begins to not only like her but wants to protect her as well.
Golden Time (2013)
Banri Tada is a college student trying to make sense of his new life after an accident leaves him with amnesia. From the moment he meets Kouko Kaga, he’s smitten, but between navigating her crush on his best friend and his old life, things are dramatically different from how he planned.
This series is perfect for fans of female characters like Aki and Fujinomiya but are interested in a rom-com with a more mature setting.
Don’t Toy with Me, Miss Nagatoro (2021)
Like Masamune-kun’s Revenge, this series takes an unconventional approach to high school romance anime, reminding viewers that sometimes it’s all about the journey. In this series, a quiet second-year student finds himself as the target of underclassman Hayase Nagatoro’s teasing and pranks.
While it seems cruel at first, their relationship slowly develops into something more as they find themselves learning more about one another.
Romantic Killer (2022)
Unlike most high school girls, Anzu Hoshino has no interest in romance. Yet, like Aki, she finds herself in the midst of a potential romance anyway, thanks to a mysterious video game and a magical wizard.
Although this series leans more into fantasy and otome game tropes, its fun modern setting and main character make this a must-watch for fans of high school romance.
My Dress-Up Darling (2022)
High school student and aspiring doll maker Wakana Gojou’s life is thrown for a loop when the popular Marin Kitagawa learns of his extraordinary sewing skills. She immediately requests his help with her cosplay outfits, leading to an interesting and unexpected friendship.
Like Masamune-kun’s Revenge, this adorable series focuses on how much you don’t really know about a person or their past until you make an effort to try.
