Why is Totally Killer Rated R - Age Rating Guide

Totally Killer is a 2023 comedy horror film available to stream on Amazon Prime that comes from the hugely successful low-budget shocker jump scare enthusiasts Blumhouse, and by association, interested viewers are wondering why it is Rated R and will need a helpful Age Rating Guide. We break it down.

Blumhouse made its name with films such as Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge, The Invisible Man, and Glass, using low to mid-budgets and hitting box office success time and time again.

It was alleged that the first Paranormal Activity film had a budget of fifteen thousand dollars and had a global take of over a hundred and ninety-three million. That is literally film gold and would set the template for the production company moving forward.

It might be worth placing a small side note here, as Blumhouse had recently purchased the rights to produce a new trilogy of Exorcist films, with the first film, Exorcist: Believer, released in October 2023.

The assumed cost of buying the property was a cool four hundred million, and that’s before the films were made, so it seems that Blumhouse has taken a huge gamble on their upcoming movies. Time will tell if this was the right move for the company to make.

However, back to our featured film, this latest offering is a more humorous horror flick that could be described as a time-traveling slasher.

Totally Killer Plot Explained

Totally Killer follows the notorious “Sweet Sixteen Killer,” a nickname given to the murderer as he stabbed each victim sixteen times during a murder spree over three decades ago, claiming the lives of three girls.

He has now returned and is looking to resume his reign of terror, targeting young Jamie, who is pursued by the killer and runs into a science fair.

She accidentally manages to time-travel back to before the killings began. When the realization of what has happened sets in, Jamie attempts to stop the psychopath before the killings start.

Why is Totally Killer Rated R?

The very nature of the film implies plenty of murder and mayhem, and the film does have quite a lot of violence and gore. The gore is not as bad as some other offerings you will have watched, but there is quite a lot of foul language throughout the screenplay, contributing to the rating.

There are some drug references and teenage drinking, which will push the rating up, and some sex references, too, so lump that all together, and you get an R.

In the UK, the film has a 15 rating for all the same reasons.

Age Rating R Guide

The MPA rated Totally Killer R for bloody violence, language, sexual material, and teen drug and alcohol use.

An R rating stands for Restricted movies that contain adult themes in abundance. So much so that anyone under 17 requires a guardian to get into the movie.

Most R-rated movies are considered to be too adult in their content for the average minor to view.
