Gen V Season 1 Episode 5 Recap
3.5

Summary

An exciting episode with darker glimpses into this insane superhero universe.

Gen V Episode 5 finally provides an exciting and enticing start — the gang waking up from what they assume is a serious night of heavy partying. There are a few R-rated scenes thrown in to really pique your interest and make you blush, but the group’s confused state doesn’t feel like a step forward in the storyline but a step back.

However, roughly in the middle of the episode, there is a great scene that mirrors that of one from The Boys, which is fun, exciting, and exactly the type of insane, unique content we expect from this superhero universe. Think fighting, think glitter, think oddly complimenting music, and think outside the box.

Spoilers ahead.

Gen V Season 1 Episode 5 Recap

The gang wakes up at Dusty’s house from what they assume was an all-night bender. As they try to retrace their liquor and drug-drenched steps from last night, nothing is quite what it seems. Only Sam knows the truth.

Dr. Cardosa confesses to Dean Shetty that he is close to perfecting the virus to have ultimate control over the supes. He doesn’t want the group to ruin everything and he insists he wants Marie to test on as her powers are extremely rare. Dean Shetty reveals that Marie has a special benefactor and hints she cannot be touched.

Marie begins to question Shetty’s motives and Marie makes a shocking discovery. Emma finds Sam saying she believes him and the two make a connection again, and they figure out who the real perpetrator who wiped their memories is.

Marie and Jordan go to find Rufus and claim he wiped their memories, but his powers only work up close, so whilst he’s trying to defend himself Andre and Cate enter and the truth is exposed.

What is Emma’s new power?

Emma now has the ability to get super big. All she has to do is eat lots of food and she grows and grows.

Unfortunately for her, this superpower isn’t going to be kept a secret as from the party there is a viral video of her dancing, drinking, and partying naked when she’s big. Emma goes viral and gains popularity for having that “big supe energy”.

How does she get back to normal size? She has to throw it all up again

What happens between Marie and Jordan?

Marie and Jordan have had sexual tension between them for the last couple of episodes.

In the beginning, they’ve woken up in bed together, but can’t remember if they’ve slept together. Here the episode explores the idea of gender being a social construct, and what sex and relationships look like for those two. As Jordan’s powers mean they can switch from male to female, there are questions about what Marie might want or prefer.

The exploration into this is handled extremely well and is enough to keep you curious, while not taking away from the main plot.

Gen V Season 1 Episode 5 Ending Explained

The episode starts with the group waking up after a night they can’t remember. Was it drugs, alcohol, or something worse? Who knows, but the group tries to figure out what happened as something doesn’t feel right.

Towards the end, all fingers are pointed at Rufus as the one who wiped everyone’s memories. He’s sleazy, works in the Dean’s office, and has done this shady stuff before so he does make the ideal candidate. However, when Marie and Jordan confront him, along with Andre and Cate, in a short tension-filled scene they discover who the real perpetrator is. Without giving too much away, the group is now spoiled.

For me, this was the most interesting and compelling episode of the season so far, and I hope the rest match this intense and curious energy.
