It’s the season of horror and murder mystery and Netflix is back with A Deadly Invitation (Invitation to a Murder in Spanish.) This Mexican whodunnit film is filled with violence, foul language, and substance use, making it a wild watch. An Agatha Christie homage with unique settings and a compelling lead character called… you guessed it, Agatha, it’s trying to capitalize on the success of other Netflix murder mysteries such as Glass Onion and Knives Out. As the film is in Spanish and is set in Mexico, in this article we will look at if it was actually filmed there, and where it might have been filmed if not.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by Carmen Posadas and is directed by JM Cravioto (Diablero, Monarca, Mexican Gangster.) The cast is made up of Peruvian actress, singer, and songwriter Stephanie Cayo, Spanish actress Maribel Verdu, former model, Columbia’s Manolo Cardona, Mexican film and stage actor, Jose Maria de Tavira, and Mexican actor, singer, and model, Aarón Díaz.

The story follows a group of people gathered together in a remote location where one of them is killed. As the rest attempt to solve the crime, one woman leads and outsmarts them all. The true-crime enthusiast gets ensnared in her high-society sister’s murder. With a villa full of posh suspects, it is up to her to find the culprit.

Following a very similar format to most other murder mysteries, there is comfort in the familiar; in this film, you’ll add up all the facts to find the killer. Critics have said the film does lack substance, as it does not develop the lead investigator enough for her to be as compelling as you’d wish.

Where was A Deadly Invitation filmed? A Breakdown of Locations

Mexico

The film is produced by Perro Azul and Windsor Films. Perro Azul is a Mexican production company who have been in the Latin American industry for over 20 years, suggesting the film was shot in and around Mexico.

There is not a lot of information or research online about where the film was shot beyond Mexico generally. With a cast made up of actors from Mexico, Spain, Peru, and Colombia this would be a good location for all to travel to. Mexico is known for its rich culture, ancient ruins, and dazzling beaches, making it a lush location for a murder mystery on a yacht.

The country is located just a few hours from the USA and a direct flight away from any major city in Europe, making it an ideal place to film if you need the sun and some seriously stunning locations at a low cost. Production costs are very competitive in Mexico, and significantly lower than in the USA, Canada, or Europe and the technical skill, creativity, and resources are of world-class quality. Therefore, why not film here?

If we can find out more locations, we will update this list.
