Upload Season 3 Episode 2 Recap
2.5

Summary

The comedy is quite lacking in this second installment from the third season, as are the meandering subplots in “Strawberry.” The filmmakers have created a rather depressing future in Upload. Yet there is just enough spark from the cast to keep this one ticking by for now.

After an action-packed opener, Prime Video’s Upload Season 3 takes its foot off the gas somewhat to explore the main two relationships in the third season instead. Episode 2, “Strawberry”, concentrates on Nora and Nathan’s real-world romance, whilst Ingrid takes a second shot at her relationship with Nathan in the digital world, even if this time she’s dating a copy of the real thing.

This recap contains major spoilers.

Upload Season 3 Episode 2 Recap

Did Freeyond’s plan work?

The second installment begins with an update on the fallout from the previous episode. The news mentions Sato’s death and the shutting down of Freeyond. The company still blames the Ludds for the fiasco though and appears to have tricked the general public into accepting this lie as the truth. Their diabolic plan may have worked, but they didn’t kill off half as many voters as they’d hoped.

Nathan and Nora continue their mission in the present, returning the drives of the individuals who gave their lives, hoping to be uploaded to Freeyond. The couple finds themselves at a farm, returning their next drive. The owners of this farm believe that they lost their son during the Ludd riots and think that this is a scam, but he was in fact killed being uploaded to Freeyond. The parents are eventually convinced and invite the couple in for a meal.

Meanwhile, in Lakeview, Ingrid and the backup Nathan are getting more intimate with each other. Ingrid summons her handler Tinsley after their latest lovemaking session to make a point. Tinsley is red-faced and clearly jealous of Ingrid. They speak together outside afterward.

Tinsley confesses to the truth; she lost Nathan and rebooted him with a backup copy. Ingrid understands the ramifications of Tinsley’s actions. The new Nathan has no memory of what happened in the last month. Ingrid now has a fresh start with her ex-boyfriend.

Ingrid decides to make the most of this mistake, ordering Tinsley to change her look and offer them a free wardrobe of clothes. Tinsley surrenders. Later, Ingrid gossips with her hairdresser, deciding to go for a new look. The stylist gives Ingrid a new hairstyle, one that closely resembles Nora’s.

Why do Nora and Nathan fall out?

Back in the real world, Nora and Nathan are interrogated about their relationship by the farmers. Nathan worries that he’ll have more nosebleeds, but seems to have survived the first 24 hours unscathed. The next day, the couple is put to work on a futuristic farm. They try to bond with each other but seem to be annoyed by the tiniest things they say or do.

Elsewhere, Aleesha is handed a promotion and is tasked with educating the AI guys about human emotions. Luke struggles to move on without Nathan in his life. I’m surprised he hasn’t bumped into the backup Nathan yet. Luke decides to delete all his old memories that include Nathan and replace them with childhood cartoons instead.

David Choak worries that he’s losing his mind, having seen Nathan in the real world and in the digital afterlife too. He wonders if he’s glitching and asks his handler for more information. Aleesha becomes concerned with Luke and questions him about his deleted memories. They comfort one another, making new memories together instead.

Nora and Nathan discuss their minor differences and agree to let them slide. They kiss and make up before heading back on their mission.

Upload Season 3 Episode 2 Ending Explained

The episode concludes in the digital afterlife. Back-up Nathan and Ingrid go out for a meal together. Nathan questions Ingrid’s new look and diet. Ingrid admits that she wants to please Nathan, but her partner is sweet, stating that he loves the old Ingrid.

Does Ingrid tell Nathan the truth?

Ingrid finally relents and owns up to her darkest secret. She admits that she never uploaded, she lied to Nathan all along. Ingrid just wanted to be with Nathan no matter what. She apologizes and surprisingly, Nathan accepts this apology with no repercussions. He just tells her to stop lying in the future. Because of Nathan’s reaction, Ingrid decides to save this copy. She tells Tinsley to cancel the deletion. The backup version survives another day.
