It’s a good time to be an anime fan, and the release of Pluto, a Japanese Netflix Original, backs this up. The series is an adaptation of the manga of the same name, created by the talented Naoki Urasaw and Takashi Nagasaki, and fans are particularly interested as this is the first time the property has received the anime treatment, fourteen years after the actual manga story concluded. Of course, the question that fans worldwide want to know the answer to is about Pluto Season 2 — will the series be renewed?

Well, here’s the answer to that question.

Will there be a Season 2 of the Netflix anime series Pluto?

There is good news and bad news about the future of the series. First of all, we have to admit that it does not look like there will be a second season for this show, but there’s a good reason behind this statement.

An article on Popverse confirms that the producer of the show himself, Masao Maruyama, explained that there would only be one season.

During a panel at the Netflix Anime Expo, Maruyama appeared in front of the fans at the panel and spoke about his experiences and career. During the panel, he would show the trailer, reveal the release date of October 2023, and talk about the series Pluto.

He explained that the show would adapt the whole story over the course of eight episodes, thereby confirming that there would only be one season for the show.

With this news coming straight from the heart of the production, it does seem as if the show will be one and done. But it also means that the first season will be a complete viewing experience, with the whole story being told.

So, although fans may be unhappy that there is no second season on the cards, at least the entire story will be revealed throughout, and the fate of the characters won’t be left up to the whims of Netflix.

How have critics reacted to Pluto?

So far the show seems to have been acclaimed by critics, with Polygon stating that the show is “one of the best on Netflix“. AIPT Comics also praised the show, stating that it’s “a masterful anime adaptation“.

Social media is awash with praise too.

IMDb has the early rating for the series at an incredible 8.9/10, and some of the reviews from the site claim the show is “a triumphant return of Astro Boy,” and “has the greatest finale in anime history”.

However, as you go further down the ratings, there are always detractors. There are some very damning low ratings connected to the show, with people saying that the pacing is “slow” and the narrative is “boring” and that to fully appreciate the story you need to know the lore.

Despite this, though, it would be unfair to say that Pluto has had a mixed reception. The consensus thus far among critics and audiences both seems to be overwhelmingly positive, as evidenced by a current 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes (presently there aren’t enough critic reviews on there to form an aggregate, but the current three are all fresh.)

As ever, it’s better to check things out for yourself. In this case, though, it seems a safe bet that anime fans will be well served by Pluto, and the fact that it won’t be getting a Season 2 seems to make the experience all the more enjoyable.
