Summary
The animation stands out in this episode as fans are treated to numerous thrilling fight sequences and unexpected outcomes.
Just when it seemed like things couldn’t get any worse, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 brought back one of the show’s most formidable villains. The sorcerers are at an all-time disadvantage, with Sukuna unleashed and already out for blood. At this point in the arc, no one remains unscathed, and yet it seems they’re no closer to releasing Gojo or freeing the hostages in Shibuya as the situation continues to get worse. Episode 16 is a thrilling, action-packed outing with plenty of unexpected fights, but it might arguably have a little too much going on for its own good.
Still, it’s nonetheless a good time, and the high-quality battles and unexpected outcomes will doubtlessly keep viewers engaged. Let’s break it down, though beware of spoilers.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 16 Recap
The episode opens with Jogo falling from a building with Sukuna following him. As he descends, he acknowledges how much stronger Sukuna is than he realized.
Megumi prepares to attack Toji, trying to visualize how he will beat him. At the same time, he suddenly feels the presence of Sukuna’s fingers in Shibuya and calls on a hoard of bunnies to protect him from Toji’s oncoming blows before attempting to flee. Still, Toji finds him anyway and easily demolishes Megumi’s forces.
Kusakabe refuses to take Panda to B5 to assist in freeing Gojo because he secretly does not want to die. As he plans to search for more scared civilians, they are suddenly approached by two curse users.
Toji continues chasing Megumi through Shibuya, attacking him with everything he has. Megumi manages to lure Toji somewhere that narrows his path but still ends up being stabbed by Toji.
Does Megumi kill Toji?
Megumi does not kill Toji. Instead, Toji suddenly pulls back from Megumi and seems to remember when he offered to sell his son to the Zenin Clan. He asks Megumi what his name is, and when Megumi replies, “Fushiguro” and not Zenin, Toji says he is glad and stabs himself in the head.
In a flashback, Geto’s followers, including Nanako, Mimiko, and the curse users who attacked Panda and Kusakabe, meet to discuss saving Geto’s body.
Jogo and Sukuna continue to fight throughout Shibuya, destroying countless buildings. Sensing something is wrong nearby, Kusakabe tells Panda they must flee.
How does Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 16 end?
Sukuna suddenly appears beside Kusakabe, Panda, and the other sorcerers. He forbids them from moving until he says so as Jogo launches a giant meteor-like strike toward the area.
Since he will not use his domain, Sukuna decides to fight Jogo using his own ability against him and pulls out a flame attack.
As Jogo prepares for death, Sukuna tells him their goal of taking the human position on earth was dumb, and they should have focused on destroying everything instead. Still, Sukuna admits Jogo was one of his stronger foes before killing him. As Jogo burns, Uraume appears to welcome Sukuna back to earth.
The episode ends with Haruta scared of being attacked by a giant foe while Megumi is unconscious in the background.
In a series that’s often praised for its action sequences, there were a lot of amazing fights in this episode. Fans finally got to see some of the most exciting moments from the trailer, as well as the battle between Megumi and Toji. Of course, it seems all of Toji’s fights have been exceptionally well choreographed this season, so that was to be expected.
My only complaint was that there was almost too much going on in this episode, as they kept going back and forth between battles and flashbacks and other important conversations instead of finishing a scene fully. While this approach can be great sometimes, there were times it felt choppy in this episode. I do appreciate that they managed to come back to most of those scenes and finish them up at least.
