Summary
“Part IV” is by far the season’s weakest episode yet. The narrative struggles to allow Bass to develop as a Marshal, making everything feel rushed.
U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves is ruffling feathers in Episode 4 of the Paramount+ series Lawmen: Bass Reeves. With him taking on many jobs hunting down the most wanted men in the South, plenty of people are beginning to hate Bass. As a result, the bounty put on his head forces him to start watching his back obsessively. However, this is a rushed episode and one of the weakest of Season 1 thus far, struggling to really do much with the character.
Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 4 Recap
Bass Reeves is hunting down men left and right, taking job after job and bringing them back into town to face the charges. One night, as Bass is sleeping, one of the prisoners attempts to attack him while he is sleeping. However, Bass is quick on his feet and gets the best of him, almost beating him to death.
What news does Bass get from Plenty?
Of course, as Bass brings more and more guys down, he has developed a target on his back. Plenty informs him that there is a bounty on his head, and it is quite a large one.
Bass also asked if Plenty had one on his head, and he nodded.
Who is Bass’s new Posseman?
In Episode 3, we saw that Garrett Montgomery became Bass’s first Posseman, but after a shootout, Garrett was killed. In that same episode, we see Bass was hunting for Billy Crow as he was a wanted man. After finding him, Bass turned him in to Judge Parker but told him that Billy was just confused. Although Judge Parker didn’t care to hear the excuses, he allowed Bass to make Billy Crow his new Posseman.
Bass’s next case had him follow the tracks of Silas Cobb. Bass goes from town to town hoping he finds him as he has done in the past. We see him enter a brothel where he knows Silas is. Bass confronts Silas and tells him he has to take him in, but the woman that he was with has other plans and pulls a gun on Bass. This allows Silas to escape out the back.
Who dies in “Part IV”?
Silas escapes and is able to get on a horse to head out of town. However, Billy Crow sees him, and Silas begins riding the horse at him and fiercely passes him. Billy pulls out his gun and shoots Silas, which leads to him falling off the horse and dying moments later.
How does Lawmen: Bass Reeves Season 1 Episode 4 end?
Bass pays a visit to Silas’s wife to deliver a letter with his last words. The woman asks about Silas, and he breaks the news that he has died. She asks him to read off the letter, at which Bass gets emotional because he misses his wife.
After leaving the woman’s house, Bass rides out and stops to give water to the horse. He hears a noise off in the distance, and it’s a man on a horse. He draws his gun, but the man disappears.
