Elvira Clancy is an obituarist, and when the local paper she writes for makes budget cuts, she takes things into her own hands to put food on the table. This is the premise for the Hulu series Obituary, which was created by Ray Lawlor and stars Siobhán Cullen in the lead role. Does the series have a Season 2 on the horizon? It may be a little early to tell, but we’ve nonetheless rounded up all the information we currently have about the show’s renewal status and potential future.

Obituary is yet to be renewed for a second season.
It’s not shocking that we don’t have any complete updates on a second season of Obituary with the series having only just made its global debut after its premiere in Ireland. Hulu made a deal with Irish public service broadcaster RTÉ to bring the rights over here, so one of the most significant factors for the series will be the watch time.
We all know that streamers look at the numbers, and it can often take months before they agree to greenlight a second season. By now, we know that three factors go into a series getting renewed. First, how it performs within those first 28 days. Second, how receptive are audiences (and, to a lesser extent, critics) to the show? Lastly, is there an artistic, narrative justification for a second season?
As for where this particular show can go if it’s renewed, we don’t want to delve too much into spoilers because the finale had a bit of a bang. However, there are many avenues that the Elvira character can be taken along which would be fruitful for another season.
I’m going to predict that the series will not be renewed for a second season, though.
How has Obituary Season 1 performed?
Obituary is an Irish-based series that debuted on September 26th on the Irish television channel RTÉ One. While the series has no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, there has been quite a bit of traction with ratings on IMDb.
The series sits with 303 ratings on IMDb and an overall rating of 6.7 out of 10. Further diving in, it has a little over 60 ten-star ratings, 33 nine-star ratings, and 75 eight-star ratings, meaning that a little over 55% of audiences rated the film higher than eight stars. Those are some fantastic numbers, albeit on a small sample size ahead of its US release.
What is Obituary about?
Obituary is set in the small town of Killraven, where we follow a 24-year-old obituarist, Elvira Clancy, who works for a struggling newspaper. Her boss informs her that her salary has been cut and that she will move to a paid-per-obituary system. As a result, Elvira begins to take things into her own hands and begins killing locals so that she can collect a paycheck.
Throughout the six-episode series, Elvira slowly begins to pick off locals but develops a conscience about what she is doing. Between trying to put food on the table and helping her elder father, Elvira’s struggle is the main highlight of the season.
