Summary

The plot thickens in My Demon Episode 2, with a real sense of danger adding another element to the typical romantic shenanigans.

In many ways, My Demon is turning out to be the quintessential romantic K-Drama – the leads are enemies but they’re so good-looking they can’t help falling for each other, etc. – but it’s also fairly impressive in its balancing of various elements. A bit of humor here, some fantasy there, a touch of real human drama for good measure, and away we go. Episode 2 capitalized on the better aspects of the premiere by delivering more of the same, which fans wanted from Season 1 in the first place.

You’ll recall that Episode 1 ended with Gu-won and Do-hee almost drowning and the former’s powers being transferred to the latter via a tattoo. This is more or less where the second episode, “Everyone Has a Demon in Their Heart”, picks up. Do-hee wakes up in hospital thoroughly confused about everything, including the tattoo, which she thinks she got when she was drunk. She’s a little wary about the man who attacked her still being out there and doesn’t quite know what to make of Gu-won hovering over her and claiming the tattoo “belongs” to him.

Has Gu-won lost his powers?

While it was clearly implied in the premiere, this episode confirms that Gu-won has indeed lost his powers, the ramifications of which for a demon – and a demon’s secretary, it seems – aren’t exactly positive. Gu-won can’t claim the soul of his recent contract, and spontaneous combustion is potentially on the cards, so he despatches his secretary to learn everything he can about Do-hee.

Who is trying to kill Do-hee and why?

Thanks to Gu-won, the police are privy to many of the details surrounding Do-hee’s would-be assassin, including a sketch of his likeness. Still, he was wearing a lifelike human mask that renders the artist’s interpretation largely useless. This guy’s largely unpleasant in various ways, from eczema on his neck that he can’t stop scratching to his obviously murderous intentions. He’s in possession of the phone that the Mirae Group whistleblower he killed used to call Do-hee, and he has it out for her and the Mirae Group because of what seems to be some closely held family secrets she isn’t privy to.

The Mirae Group all hate Do-hee

What we do learn in this episode is that Madam Ju was present when Do-hee’s parents died; the explosion from their car accident is what damaged her knee, which is why she walks with a cane. It doesn’t mean much on its own for now, but it’ll probably matter later, and it throws some suspicion over Madam Ju when she claims to Do-hee not to be hiding anything.

What becomes increasingly clear throughout this episode is that all of Mirae Group’s “family” seems to have it out for Do-hee, some of them to a dangerous extent, and the question of why is the big one lingering over the series thus far. Sook-hoon, Madam Ju’s nephew, Mirae F&B’s financial advisor, and potential romance for Do-hee seems to be play-acting his affection for her. And Su-ahn, the head of Mirae Apparel, is contributing to the tanking share price of Mirae F&B through various scandalous articles.

How does My Demon Season 1 Episode 2 end?

Luckily, Gu-won quickly and literally positions himself as something of a protector for Do-hee, taking an acid bath that someone throws her way at the end of the episode.

Of course, Gu-won is mostly just trying to get his powers back, but that hardly matters at this stage since Do-hee is conveniently in need of someone capable like him. It seems like everyone is out to get her and the plot is thickening at an alarming rate, so this burgeoning romance may well become a matter of life and death sooner rather than later.
