The Queenstown Kings follows the hard knock journey of the titular football team qualifying for the Nedbank Cup. The film was directed by Jahmil X.T, Qubeka, and stars William Adams, Athenkosi Cwele, Geinuhlanga Dibi, and Mark Fish. The story follows a promising young football player from rural Queenstown who is thrown into turmoil when his washed-up, pro-footballer father re-enters his life and makes him re-evaluate the decisions he has made about his team’s success and his own ambition. With problems surrounding the club’s funding, police raids, and players getting shot, the gritty film explores corruption, addiction, and violence as well as teamwork, friendships, and family. With Netflix always trying to bolster its South African library and the film having been relatively well-liked by critics and audiences, will The Queenstown Kings 2 return to defend its title?

Is a sequel to The Queenstown Kings planned?

At the time of writing, there is no official word about a sequel to The Queenstown Kings.

With the film only recently dropping on Netflix, it will be a while before the numbers arrive that will decide whether or not the platform might have an interest in producing a sequel. In the meantime, the film has a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb and has received some attention, particularly from football fans, but it remains to be seen if it will get some extra time with a sequel.

The film manages to blend various ideas, including sports, drama, and grim thriller, into one package, so there’s a scope for a large audience to give this film a go. In our review we said:

This film highlights the strength of community and understanding the value of building that foundation so you’re able to move on to bigger and greater things. Director Jahmil X.T. Qubeka is also a co-writer with Clyde Berning on this film, and they work together to make a strong sports drama.

As usual, it will all come down to the figures.

What could The Queenstown Kings 2 be about?

Following up on the themes and characters from the first film would be important for a sequel, as the film does have a pretty open-ended third act, leaving scope for more stories to be told. In our breakdown of The Queentown Kings’ ending, we said:

Fezile and Buyile do have a heart-to-heart towards the end of the film about him rejoining the Queenstown Kings. Buyile knows that his son wants to make a name for himself and get away from a certain lifestyle and fully supports his decision to play for the Sundowns. Buyile also gives him a signed jersey from all his teammates showing that they all want him to succeed. Shortly after he goes to the Director of Football and quits entirely. The next match, Fezile turns up with a Queenstown Kings jersey and sees his grandfather alongside his father on the field. All is at peace with his family and he feels much better with his decision.

Although there is a sense of closure, it does appear that the writers have more ideas about the characters in this film, and with films that have a centre in sports, there is always scope for more games, more drama, and more interactions between the ensemble cast.

Would Netflix make a sequel for this film?

It is well within the realms of possibility for Netflix to greenlight a sequel for The Queenstown Kings. Netflix is always interested in producing more content if they feel there is an audience waiting for it, especially a specific international audience. Many franchise films have been successful for the platform — ExtractionKnives Out — and many sequels are currently in production.

Fans on social media seem to have enjoyed the film, showing Netflix that there would clearly be an audience for a sequel:
