Summary
Episode 8 is a solid finale which provides many dramatic moments and turns while also leaving plenty on the table for Season 3.
As suspected, the Sweet Home Season 2 ending doesn’t necessarily feel like an ending to the series but more of a stop-gap between seasons. Ordinarily, that would be a major criticism, but in this case, Episode 8 sticks the landing of a middling second season. While there is undeniably a lot of setups for Season 3, there is also a good amount of shock, drama, emotion, and action, which means that for the most part, the season finale can function on its own terms.
We also get the climax of several ongoing storylines and character arcs, and while some are left deliberately mysterious, we do get to enjoy the sad climax of the parental relationship between Yi-kyung, Hyun-su, and the Red Ribbon Girl, we get to see Eun-hyeok’s much-teased return, and we also discover the real identity of Ui-myeong.
Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 8 Recap
How does Yi-kyung die?
Yi-kyung meets a tragic fate in Episode 8 – or, more accurately, two of them. After being turned into a monster by her own daughter, she is subsequently euthanized by Hyun-su after he realizes how much agony and turmoil she is experiencing.
The circumstances of this are rather grim. While most shows would have had mother reconnect with daughter in some way, this one really rubs salt into the wound by having Yi-kyung’s daughter use her power to turn her into a monster not to save her but to curse her with the worst fate she could have possibly imagined. When Hyun-su is exposed to her memories, he sees the nightmare loop she is stuck in, her hatred for monsters and her complicated feelings about her own child, and he has no choice but to put her out of her misery.
What is Ui-myeong’s real identity?
While he was absent from a good chunk of the season, the finale of Season 2 reveals that Ui-myeong has really been Sang-won, Yi-kyung’s fiancé, all along.
We already knew in Season 1 that Ui-myeong’s body belonged to one of the scientists who had endlessly experimented on him. The reveal that all of Sang-won’s screentime in Season 2 was really him being controlled by Ui-myeong is a good one but might have been a little more impactful had Yi-kyung still been alive. Nonetheless, Ui-myeong is conducting experiments on how to turn humans into monsters and will likely be the Big Bad in Season 3.
Has Hyun-su lost control?
Hyun-su has very much been sidelined throughout Season 2 after disappearing in Episode 3, but he has a pretty big impact in Episode 7 and the finale. By the end of Episode 8, though, he has been fully taken over by his monster side.
Monster Hyun-su has a mocking conversation with Eun-yu implying that he has a hostility towards humans and may even be on the way to becoming another villain in the third season.
Who killed Chief Ji’s husband?
This is the subplot that seems weakest in the grand scheme of things. It is revealed that it was Hyun-su who killed Chief Ji’s husband, but Eun-yu was happy to accept the blame for it since she couldn’t tell the military that a monster saved her. Chief Ji is also secretly harboring a monster and feeding it troublesome people, though there’s still clearly a lot of explanation that needs to be given in this regard.
How does Sweet Home Season 2 end?
Sweet Home Season 2 ends with the bombshell reveal that Eun-hyeok is indeed still alive – though he is a unique form of new monster. Like Ms. Im, he has been gestating in a Green Home cocoon, and the final shot shows him slithering from it and smiling straight to the camera, clearly not intending any altruistic acts in his immediate future.
Oh, and Season 2 also ends by revealing that Season 3 will return in 2024. This is good news for fans, who had to wait three whole years to see Season 2.
