Summary

The fourth episode is the first to feel like part of a new season, introducing many fresh faces and dynamics for the old crew to contend with.

Episode 4 of Sweet Home Season 2 is, in many ways, the first episode to really feel like it’s part of a new season. The breakneck pace slows down just a little, new characters are introduced to replace the old ones we’ve lost, fresh dynamics begin to be established, and it feels like we’re in legitimately new territory.

This can be a little disorienting at the midpoint of a second season. It’s a lot of new introductions to make and people to meet and suss out. But it comes on the back of a sensible plot point in Episode 3 that justifies a time skip and the inclusion of many new faces, so it’s hard to quibble too much.

Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 4

That time skip takes us to 337 days since the beginning of the… what are we calling it? Monster mash? Either way, since the start of the story. The military and former Green Home survivors have merged their community with another in the bowels of a stadium, but while Tak and his men are handling security and enforcing a curfew, the Green Home folks are seen as outcasts at best and, in the case of Eun-yu, are actively hated.

Why does Chief Ji hate Eun-yu?

Everyone is loyal to Chief Ji, who particularly has it out for Eun-yu since she blames her for murdering her husband. In exchange for helping out a couple of the survivors, Sang-jin and Dong-gi, she requests that they follow her around, and another survivor named Jun-il follows them in turn. Flashbacks hint at Eun-yu’s backstory with Ji’s husband while Sang-jin and Dong-gi plot to kill her to earn Ji’s favor.

A red ribbon is used as a strong visual motif in this episode. In the flashback, Eun-yu puts one around the arm of the monster she kills and it crops up again later. This subplot also forms the bulk of the episode but runs into another side story about a mysterious girl who is first encountered by Jun-il after he runs off. Her touch causes his memories to flood his mind and paralyze him.

The same girl reappears later while Sang-jin and Dong-gi are chasing Eun-yu, who has realized they’re following her. While Eun-yu hides, the girl possesses Dong-gi into killing Sang-jin.

Relationship Drama

The rest of the episode is devoted to introducing several new characters and dynamics. Ji’s daughter Ye-seul, for instance, has a thing for Chan-young, and Sergeant Choi has a thing for the injured Ji-na, but then again so does Seon-hwa, who hangs around with Ye-seul but pretends to be mad. If this all sounds a little bit soapy, that’s because it is.

But it’s clearly laying character groundwork for later, which is fair enough. Drama ensues when Choi abandons his post to find medicine for Ji-na and subsequently goes missing, and Mrs. Oh steps on a landmine. This creates some nested problems, with Tak and his expedition squad having to respond to the immediate problem (the landmine, which Chan-young drives a truck over) and shelve the other problem (Choi being missing) for later.

How does Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 4 end?

The episode ends with the reappearance of that red ribbon – this time around the arm of the mystery girl that has been cropping up throughout the episode. After Eun-yu’s hiding place in an abandoned building is surrounded by monsters, the girl draws them away while Eun-yu flees. After, the girl presents herself to Eun-yu while wearing the ribbon.
