Summary
Episode 6 feels as if it’s juggling a few too many characters and subplots, raising concerns about whether Sweet Home Season 2 can build to a satisfactory conclusion before the end of the season.
Sweet Home Season 2 is a big show. It has big ideas. And there’s literally a lot of it, with eight episodes running comfortably over an hour and in some cases to feature-length. The pacing has been all over the place in the first half, but the bigger problem might be the writers having bitten off more than they can chew. For a show with this much space to feel as overstuffed and all over the place as Episode 6 does, with barely any chance of wrapping up everything that’s going on within the two remaining episodes, that’s probably cause for concern.
Between Eun-yu, Yi-kyung and the Red Ribbon Girl, Hyun-su and Ui-myeong, Lim, all the shady survivors at the stadium, and the bickering military, there’s just so much to deal with that it hardly seems plausible to actually deal with it. An already-confirmed third season seems to explain a lot of why this is the case, but it doesn’t improve the experience of Season 2 in the meantime.
Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 6 Recap
Things get off to an absolutely psychotic start. For a moment, put aside Eun-yu running off after Yi-kyung and the Red Ribbon Girl and getting trapped in a pit, and let’s talk about Jun-il and his mother for a minute.
What happens to Mrs. Oh and Jun-il?
So, Jun-il has gone properly bonkers and decided that the best thing for his mother is to die so that she’s no longer subject to any pain – this despite her healing slightly in the previous episode and her saying outright in this one that she’s not actually in any pain. So, Jun-il does the reasonable thing and tries to poison his mother with herbicide.
This doesn’t work, so he does the next best thing and angrily rips off the door of her cell and stabs her to death with a length of metal. And then he literally explodes. Lim watches this with increasing fascination and then horror, before rushing to get Tak to cover the whole thing up. Lim still stands for hope, the idea that humanity is endeavoring to better their circumstances, even if this kind of thing doesn’t count as “better” by any definition of the term.
What is Ji hiding?
Things at the stadium are quickly becoming untenable. Ji is emotionally all over the place, talking to photos, snapping at Ye-seul, and getting wildly emotional about Mrs. Oh’s fate when Tak announces it. With Kim in agreement with Tak that they can’t go out looking for Choi, there’s a lot of simmering tension and disagreement here that is right on the cusp of boiling over.
When Dong-gi, Sang-jin, Eun-yu, and Chan-young all miss roll call, things only get worse. Tak is fuming about there being a hidden exit he didn’t know about, but Ji seems to have many more secrets than that. When Ye-seul, distressed over the idea that Chan-young might have eloped with Eun-yu, tries to speak to her, she finds her room locked and gets a slap for trying to force entry.
What is the relationship between Yi-kyung and the mystery girl?
The rather obvious theory that the Red Ribbon Girl is Yi-kyung’s daughter is confirmed in this episode, but they don’t exactly have a strong parental relationship. In flashbacks, we get some additional context of her growing into her possession powers, though Yi-kyung doesn’t understand her reasoning for why she has been using them in the way she has. Nevertheless, it’s easy to identify with the girl, who was privy to her mother’s horrified thoughts upon discovering that her offspring was monsterfied. I mean, to be fair, it was quite a horrifying image.
The relationship only becomes more strained when Yi-kyung tries to kill her daughter’s baby monster friend, and they part ways.
How does Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 6 end?
In a flurry of late developments, Ji-na reveals she has a terminal illness and begs Kim to locate Choi, guided by an SOS signal from Bamseom, and Tak starts to turn, attempts to kill himself, and accidentally attacks Lim. Lim offers to make him a special infected who can control his transformation and powers, but of course, such gifts don’t come without strings attached.
At the very end of the episode, Red Ribbon Girl approaches Eun-yu, who is looking for Yi-kyung. The girl reveals that Yi-kyung is her mother, but also expresses her generally negative sentiments about all humans, including her mother, and that extends to Eun-yu, whom she pushes into a very deep hole.
Luckily, Hyun-su – remember him? – appears out of nowhere, flies down the tunnel with his T-Virus arm, and spirits Eun-yu to safety.
