Summary

The penultimate episode of Sweet Home Season 2 is a solid outing that brings a lot of storylines and characters together just in time for the finale.

I’ve been a bit critical of Sweet Home Season 2 in the last few recaps, but Episode 7, the penultimate outing, is pretty good. It feels like it’s actually going somewhere rather than running in place, and the abundance of characters and plot threads do seem to be coalescing into a more coherent overarching story as we head into the finale.

Sure, I’m still less than convinced that we’ll get a satisfactory conclusion here given the obvious setup for Season 3, but I can live with that if the finale can deliver a short-term conclusion that won’t leave us unsatisfied for however many years it takes the follow-up to be released.

Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 7 Recap

Things begin with an explanatory flashback that reveals Yi-kyung tried to kill her monster daughter when she was born. And, look, not to be controversial, but I kind of understand this. Eating its umbilical cord is one thing, but it isn’t like everything we’ve seen thus far implies that monsters can grow up in this world living a lovely life. Death would have probably been a favor.

Nevertheless, Yi-kyung can’t do it and leaves the infant monster with Hyun-su, who raises her. Yi-kyung approaches again after watching from afar on the assumption that the monster side of her offspring isn’t too pronounced, but the possession thing kind of puts paid to that idea. Yi-kyung’s messed-up eye is a result of her cutting the kid and the kid retaliating, and Hyun-su, understandably, isn’t wildly keen on the way the mother-daughter relationship is playing out.

Baby Daddy Hyun-su

Catching back up with the end of Episode 6, Hyun-su has saved Eun-yu, and she realizes it was also him who saved her in Episode 4 at the warehouse building, which we incorrectly assumed had something to do with Red Ribbon Girl. Hyun-su isn’t keen on the idea of a happy reunion, though, and is even less happy when his “daughter” expresses her hatred for humans and insists she needs neither him nor her mother.

Hyun-su, given his neohuman status, is highly sympathetic to the monsters and their backgrounds and what they’re potentially capable of when humans aren’t constantly trying to kill them. After saving Yi-kyung from the burning boat she passes out on, he reminds her of this, still sickened of how she would treat her own daughter. He uses the baby monster’s intention of helping her to prove his point.

Rescue Mission

While the remnants of the stadium survivors have a bit of a vibe at Peter’s mass, a big search party, including Lim, sets out to help Kim find Choi. Tak and his men remain to defend the stadium.

Of course, taking Lim anywhere is always a bit of a risk. His fiddling with cocoons antagonizes several monsters and results in a narrow escape, but they eventually reach a ruined Bamseom and split into two groups – Seok-chan and Kim go with Lim, while Seo-jin leads the others in search of Choi.

Lim continues to examine various strange cocoons, some of them glowing, along the way, but finally agrees to focus on the objective when Kim and Seok-chan are pulled away to rescue Seo-jin’s group, who has been pursued by an odd gloop.

How does Sweet Home Season 2 Episode 7 end?

Eventually, Hyun-su shows up with a burned Yi-kyung at Ho-sang’s camp, and after a bit of a disagreement that leads to Ha-ni dragging Ho-sang away, Eun-yu and Chan-young take Hyun-su and Yi-kyung back to the stadium.

Things aren’t looking too good at the stadium, with a monster alarm inside Ji’s secret room having caused a commotion and alerted Tak and his men to a potential monster threat. Tak is still hiding his transformation from everyone, but that doesn’t last too long.

As the episode ends Tak begins to have some worrying hallucinations of him murdering the survivors, and Dong-jun notices that his arm has healed from an earlier cut. The implication is pretty clear, and not remotely positive.
